Dresden sorts through recycling rules

The discussion of what to do about plastic recycling was a topic at the Dresden selectmen's meeting April 2.

Lincoln County Recycling is having trouble getting rid of the plastic as apparently, “China is not buying it anymore,” Selectman Allan Moeller Sr. said. New rules have taken effect and County Administrator Carrie Kipfer has said Dresden's transfer station has opted to accept only #2 plastic.

“I can’t believe we are stepping backwards on this,” Carol Fackler of Middle Road said. “I find it disturbing that we are throwing plastic back into the environment. I just need to know if the three of you are putting tremendous pressure on Lincoln County.”

There was also concern that if they turned people away with recycling, people might become discouraged and not bother anymore.

Moeller stated that Lincoln County Recycling has been searching for a solution to this for six months, and that he will continue to talk with the agency.

“There must be another market for plastic,” Chairman Dale Hinote said. “We’ve become too dependent on China to make everything easy for us.”

Selectmen agreed to reach out to Lincoln County Recycling first to try and come up with solutions.

In other business, Henderson said he had spoken with representatives from the Maine Municipal Association about the town taking over ownership of Forest Hill Cemetery. As long as there are no deed restrictions of trusts held, the process will be fairly simple. If there is a trust, there are a lot more steps involved.

Sherry Moody, one of the current owners of the cemetery, said the cemetery dates to 1887 and she does not know of any restrictions or trusts connected with it.

“We should hold a public hearing on this,” Hinote said. “It seems relatively simple, we just need to confirm the facts to move forward.”

There was a brief discussion about the results of the marijuana business survey, which had mixed, though fairly negative, results. A copy will be posted on the town website and the committee will be meeting again to make recommendations to the board based on the survey.

Selectmen meet next at 5 p.m. April 12 at the town office, as their next regularly scheduled meeting would fall on Patriot’s Day.
