Product Description

helle

Helle

From the start in 1932, Helle knives have been made and sold based on the same set of principles of honesty, hard work and quality. From these principles the Helle philosophy has evolved from the past, place, people and production that is Helle knives.

  • Helle knife goes through up to 45 different manual operations
  • Sheaths are made of specially tanned leather
  • Uses wood of curly grained birch

Helle Alden - Traditional Field Knife

Each Helle knife is different because we want it to be, but they all share the same philosophy.

The Alden is named after the island Alden. Alden is still an important landmark for Fishermen coming home from the sea. The island is situated just of the coast from where the Helle factory is situated. The Alden has a non-laminated stainless steel blade (12C27) and curly birch handle with stainless steel fittings towards the blade. It has a small and useful finger guard to fit in a pouch style sheath.

  • Handmade in Holemdal, Norway since 1932.
  • Handle Length = 5.1"(130 mm).
  • Blade Length = 4.1"(105 mm).
  • Blade Thicknes = .11"(3.0 mm)
  • Genuine Leather Sheath Included. Designed by Gunnar Lothe in 2009.

The past is always with us.

Instead of working against history, Helle has prospered and thrived from embracing it. This is represented in our knives. Many are based on traditional designs, and we treasure the handmade finishes that have been the hallmark of Helle knives throughout history. The past is always with us as we embrace the future.

EBC

A small piece of our heritage.

The fjords, mountains and rugged climate are not an obstacle, but rather an inspiration. The remote location and small community of Holmedal is not a source of limitation, but a source of strength and identity. Each time we send a Helle knife out into the world, we bring a small piece of our heritage along with it.

EBC

Trust and Familiarity.

Family tradition is not just at the management level, we have second- and third generation factory workers as well. We treasure our tight-knit community, and that feeling of trust and familiarity transmits to the products we produce.

EBC

Individuality enhances it.

No two Helle knives are exactly the same because each receive individual treatment by human hands. For us individuality does not come at the expense of quality, but rather enhances it. By finishing each blade individually, we are able to bring out the best of the place, past, people and production facilities at Helle.

Built to last

Outstanding craftsmanship

Three generations of hands are working diligently to produce knives at our factory in Holmedal. They work in tandem with three generations of machinery. An original Helle knife goes through up to 45 different manual operations before it passes through our quality control procedure.

Carefully selected materials

Good craftsmanship requires the ability to create handle shapes which are consistent with the blade, fit comfortably in the hand, and add character to the knife. In most handles, we use the hard and beautifully structured wood of curly grained birch, alone or in combination with matching materials, such as leather and stag horn.

The Sheath – the Nordic way

Our sheaths are made of specially tanned leather, and treated with saddle grease for increased lustre and durability. The particular shape of the Norwegian sheath bears evidence of long-time functional development and at the same time, it enhances the quality of the knife.

The steel in Helle knives is unique

The differences between a Helle knife and other knives are many. The biggest difference lies in our triple laminated stainless steel blade. The core is made of high alloy steel which gives it a lasting, razor-sharp edge. This harder layer cannot however exclude the threat of rust or breakage.

Incredible Blade. Great for Deer. Look no further...
I don't leave product reviews very often, but I'm so impressed with this knife that I'm compelled to tell the world. Yes, like everyone has said, it's ridiculously razor sharp. I've processed two whitetail deer with it since I purchased it. Field dress, skinned, quartered, and even used it some through the butchering process. Man is it a satisfying tool to work with. Cuts through skin and meat like its butter. I'd prefer a little longer knife for quartering and butchering, so I might pick up the Helle Sylvsteinen sometime as well.I love the triple laminated steel. I like the edge retention and durability of high carbon, but have had some high carbon blades start to rust a little even with good cleaning and oil care. Even with the messy job of field dressing, this knife comes completely clean (back to the mirror finish, even) with a little warm soapy water. Just dry, gently oil and return to sheath.Speaking of the sheath, I've heard others say it's a European vs. American design trend (not sure if that's right,) but most of my other knives the sheath only covers the blade, leaving some of the handle length above the belt loop. I didn't know how I'd like this sheath design, but It's actually really nice that the whole blade and handle hangs below the belt loop. I carry it with me in the woods for the duration of every hunt, hunting from the ground and in a tree stand, and this design means the knife handle never digs into my side or stomach like might sometimes happen with an "American" style sheath. Also the leather is of good quality and has already (a couple months) flexed and molded more into the knife shape as you'd expect.I'm telling all my fellow hunting/woodsmen friends about this knife. If you're considering this or another Helle knife then GET ONE!

I loved this knife! The handle was warm to the touch and had a soft texture that covered the tang on the palm side which is important if you plan to use it in cold conditions. The handle ergonomics were also excellent making the knife feel very natural to hold. The sheath was very well made and very evenly dyed light brown color that retained the knife well. Full disclosure: I did return this knife for no reason that involved the quality or the seller, instead it was a payment arrangement I had made with Amazon which they did not satisfy so if you are tempted to purchase this item make sure you can purchase it make sure you pay for it in full up front because it apparently Amazon is unwilling to follow through on other arrangements on this item.

Bardufoss Air Base, close to Andselv, was where I spent some time in the fall of 1979 as a member of our Air National Guard. The Norwegian citizens and members of the Norge Air Force were most kind and impressed me with their fierce nationalistic pride. Until I bought this fine Helle Guave knife, I only had some pewter pieces as souvenirs. I now own a beautiful reminder of a beautiful country.

I have never paid over $100 for a knife, so I had to take a chance. I am glad I bought this. I had misgivings about the grip, but the protrusions at both ends of the handle ease my mind. I can't say how it holds an edge until I use it, but this is the sharpest blade out of the package that I own.

When I hold this handsome knife, I know that nobody in the world owns one that looks exactly like mine. I look forward to skinning and dressing my deer, next fall. Until then, I really don't intend to use it for any other purpose.

Helle knives are probably not as well known as usual names like Buck, Case, Boker u get what I mean. However the knife blades on Helle knives and their beautiful handles are not only beautiful but the blades are designed and hand made with quality that normally requires far more money. I will continue to add Helle knives to my larger personal knife collection.

I love this knife: it works well, and looks great. It's a good size for general outdoor tasks (e.g., wood carving, cutting rope, leather, etc., simple food prep) , fairly light, and holds a great edge. The birch handle is warm, fairly comfortable in my large hands (though see exceptions below), and easy to grip in most circumstances. The simple sheath is light and effective, and I like the versatility of the thong attachment (you can tie it on anywhere). The blade is surprisingly thick which has its advantages and drawbacks: on the plus side, it is tough and gives comfortable thumb or finger purchase for bearing down hard or increasing carving control, or for pinching while choking up to do fine tip work; on the minus side it doesn't slice some things amazingly well (for example, trying to make thin onion or tomato slices will frustrate you).

As with some other reviewers, my Helle came with a few quirks and imperfections: in my case, none was at all a problem, and to me these small things add character and show signs of the hand-made/finished nature of these knives and natural materials. For example, the bevel grinds of my knife are not perfectly symmetrical, but this does not affect its function in the least (the edge is still fully within the hardened center laminated layer). The blade did not come shaving sharp, but I made it that way after some quality time with water stones and a strop (literally: I partially shaved with it that day with no more than the usual bloodshed :)).

I've gotten the Viking wet and dirty, dropped it on rocks, and carved several objects (spoons, knife handles, stakes, halloween pumpkins etc.) over the past few weeks, and neither the blade nor the handle have suffered anything aside from minor cosmetic damage, and the edge usually comes back to razor sharpness after no more than a stropping. My one complaint is that the handle is a bit too small for my hands for sustained heavy wood carving (I have to grip it tightly to really bear down which leads to fatigue), but for my general carry-around knife to do a bit of everything, it's hard to beat. I love its looks as well: simple, but high quality; handsome, but not too pretty to use hard. I'll be holding onto this one.

If your looking for a great "do it all" kind of outdoor knife, this Temagami is a great buy. It's beautiful, ergonomic, performs well, and isn't too expensive. I'm always a little bit leery with Helle knives due to some sketchy quality control issues I've been subjected to with previous purchases. This blade came perfect. No defects, the grind was centered, and everything looked great. It has worked great as a general camping/bushcraft blade so far. Sharp out of the tube. I did a linseed/pastewax treatment on the handle and it really brought out the curly birch. It fits the hand very well, and for a bigger blade (i usually only like blade lengths under 3.5 inches) it has great balance. It shreds through wood making tent stakes, notches, and feather sticks. It even excels at batoning due to the extended tang, although i will add, I'm not a big fan of using a knife to baton generally. I have not got to use for any hunting/game cleaning but the blade shape appears indicative of a good knife. The sheath is decent, def not anything to write home about, but it does a decent job and has good retention. All in all, this is a great blade that really could be a one knife outdoor option.
