Film screenings: "To Brooklyn and Back: A Mohawk Journey" & "Bronx Llaktamanta"
“To Brooklyn and Back” tells the fascinating story of how Mohawk women sustained a vibrant indigenous community in the heart of Brooklyn while Mohawk high steel workers were building Manhattan’s iconic skyscrapers in the 1920s to 1960s.
Set almost a century later, “Bronx Llaktamanta” portrays a Kichwa community from the Andes who started a radio station in the Bronx to ensure the survival of their language and culture in New York.
On the day of the 9th anniversary of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, we welcome you to a film and debate night about indigenous peoples’ identity, cultural survival and contributions to the world’s urban areas.
The screening will be followed by a discussion and Q&A.
PLEASE NOTE: The UN is not able to provide any support to travel or visa arrangements for the event.
