Boston College Law Library has held a Diversity Read group discussion over the last three years. Our prior reading selections have been: The Color of Water (2009), Run (2010), and Little Bee (2011). Each year’s group has shared an enthusiastic and engaged response to the readings.

We’d like your input on the selection of a title to read this spring for Diversity Month. You can vote using the survey below or by completing a paper survey form posted at the Law Library’s entrance. We’ll post the survey results and dates for the reading group discussion prior to semester break. Thank you!

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby: This is the memoir of a French journalist who was felled by a massive stroke at age 44, leaving him without movement or speech but mentally intact and able to communicate through blinking his eye. He wrote his 131-page memoir by blinking as letters of the alphabet were called out to him by his assistant. He describes his active past life, his inactive locked-in state and his joy at simply living to see the next sunset.

De Profundis by Oscar Wilde: A letter to Alfred Douglas, Wilde's past lover, written from prison while Wilde was incarcerated for "gross indecency" because of his homosexuality. The book has continuing relevance in light of recent young adult suicides after being bullied because of their sexual orientation.

A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard: Memoir by a woman who was abducted at age 11 and held against her will for 18 years; she gave birth to 2 daughters fathered by her abductor during her period in captivity.

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford: A historical novel of a budding romance between a Chinese-American boy and a Japanese-American girl during the years immediately preceding and following the internment of Japanese Americans. Remarkable for its depiction of many forms of racial and ethnic intolerance simultaneously.

Try to Remember by Iris Gomez: A novel by a Massachusetts immigration attorney about a Colombian family trying to adjust to life in Miami when they arrive in the 1970s. Told from the perspective of a young adult daughter struggling with adjusting to living in the U.S. and with the ramifications of her father's untreated schizophrenia.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett: Set during the civil rights movement, this novel is the basis for the popular movie about the lives of African-American domestic workers in early 1960s Mississippi who are convinced to tell the stories of how they are treated by the families who employ them.
