The world’s largest solar-powered aircraft Solar Impulse 2, which took off from the Abu Dhabi airport in March, 2015, completed its trip across the planet after almost 16 months.

It returned to the Abu Dhabi International Airport earlier today.

Solar Impulse 2 completed its 40,000 km journey in about 17 legs. This achievement could be considered as the first stride towards pollution-free air travel.

The plane was piloted by Bertrand Piccard during the last stage between Egypt and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Andre Borschberg was the flight’s second pilot.

It has flown over 500 hours over the Arabian Sea, India, Myanmar, China, the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, the US, southern Europe and North Africa.
