CRISWELYMPICS 2011.05 Beta
Multiplayer Competition Events for Minecraft
Introduction
The Criswelympics are a continuation of an ancient tradition of sportsmanship and keyboard athleticism that embodies the highest and most noble endeavors of gamedom: the pursuit of achievement beyond personal limitations, to strive for grace toward technical perfection, and most importantly to foster a communal spirit of fun, sportsmanship, and a love of blowing stuff up and occasionally killing things -- the true spirit of the Game itself.
Installation
Extract the Criswelympics v1.5.0 folder to your .minecraft/saves directory. Do NOT create a new folder when extracting; the World folder is already contained in the setup archive.
Criswelympics is current with Minecraft version b1.5_x. No mods are required to play. A modified version may be forthcoming in the future, but the intention is to maintain a vanilla MC-compatible version as the official edition.
About Criswelympics 1.5.0 Beta
This map includes arenas for several original competitive events in Minecraft, and I have done my best to envision a system of play which is both fun and feasible. However this map is still currently in a Beta testing phase, and in future releases may be revised and improved upon pending feedback from you, the players. You are welcome to implement your own house rules and variations on the rules provided as well. A few features are yet to be implemented, particularly redstone and sound effects for the Clucky Puck rink, but some tweaks to existing systems are already planned as well.
Please feel free to comment and offer suggestions and critique in the main thread on minecraftforum.net. I am most interested in what works best, and how the rest could work better. Have fun exploring the grounds and please enjoy!
Getting Started
New Arrivals to Minerva find themselves on the beach near the Yacht Club and Fort Redoubt. To easily reach the Criswelympics, travel up the cobble path and following the signs, take the road West to Westcrag. From the Westcrag intersection take the North road to the Criswelympic stadiums. The path is brightly-lit, and a train line runs between Fort Redoubt and Westcrag as well, serving as both optional transportation and a clear landmark.
The Criswelympics officially begin after the Opening Ceremony takes place. First, the Criswelympic Lava Bucket must be carried across the lands of Minerva, from Point Providence to the Captain’s Cove, from North Shore to Southern Cross, to light the torch, and hopefully the entire Criswelympic emblem on fire, kindling the fiery spirit of the Champions themselves.
This epic journey, symbolizing the burning spirit of man striving for the highest excellence, can be abridged to a short jog up the main path if expediency is desired.
The Opening Ceremony can involve any type of celebratory activity, from a dance party to a mass egg battle. When order is restored, let the Games begin!
Criswelympics Overview
Currently there are eleven main events in the Criswelympics, each with its own arena. These arenas are all relatively close and connected by clear paths and signs. The world spawn is set at the path leading to the event grounds, seen tending North then West.
By proceeding from event to event in a figure-eight or loop fashion, starting either left or right from the entrance, the park may be traversed with a minimum of confusion for simple event coordination. The exception is the optional eleventh event, the Minerva Cup Regatta which begins near the worldspawn.
General Gameplay
• Difficulty should probably be set to “Peaceful” for most events, although this is not required. Monster Melee Arena will obviously only work on Easy or above, and Normal or Hard is recommended during both this event and the Minerva Cup Regatta, and also if you plan on doing the Dungeon Adventure (see Bonus Challenge section at end).
• Only the equipment provided in the locker rooms may be taken into a playing field. Stash any non-regulation equipment in the lockers before entering the playing area. Use the beds provided to set a speedy respawn near each event, in case of equipment failure.
• Use handy server management tools to quickly restore damaged stadiums and restock equipment.
• For smaller groups of players, some formalities and extraneous roles can be overlooked or consolidated to benefit a smoother experience.
Official Event Rulebook – 1st Edition
Presented here is an abridged overview of the events included in the current competition. The full Official Rulebook is included in the Player's Guide that comes with the world folder. It is recommended that all participants read and familiarize themselves with the rules for each event. A separate Player’s Handbook is available to download as a quick reference for players who do not wish to run a server or download the full map. The Player's Guide links are below the Full Download links at the bottom of this post.
BASKETBAWK
Players
Two teams of 2-5 players each.
Objective
To score the most points within the time limit by throwing eggs into your team’s basket in your opponents end of the court. However, for the point to count, the egg must hatch into a chicken and drop into the basket onto the scoring plate, which will sound a score. The lucky chicken is then humanely euthanized by a painless combination of arrows and fire.
Objective
To simultaneously light all 3 of your team’s goals by throwing an egg into each goal drop of your team color. The egg must spawn a chicken and the chicken must drop into the trap and light the goal to count. The first team with a chicken in each trap at once wins the round.
Sounds too easy? Okay, the eggs must be thrown from the back of a saddled pig. It’s sorta like Polo, but on piggyback… with chickens. Pig-Pollo!
Players
One or two players. Referee, scorekeeper and monster handler roles must also be assigned.
Objective
Solo - To defeat the most monster opponents before succumbing to attrition.
2-player - To outlast your opponent against the onslaught of monsters.
Players
Up to six players. Players can compete individually, or even teams can be assigned by Primary (Red-Yellow-Blue) and Secondary (Green-Orange-Purple) colors.
Objective
To be the last remaining player in a burning construction of colored wool by building wool bridges away from the fire, lighting your opponents’ bridges on fire, and knocking your opponents out of the game.
Objective
To knock out the 10 redstone “pins” by rolling a slimeball across the ice into the ten pockets. The slimeballs must be rolled from the top of the pitch platform only. The player who scores the most points per pin after using all 20 balls, or who knocks out all pins first wins. Basically a combination of bowling and skeetball.
No one gets hurt, everyone has a good time. Crack open a cold one, it must be Slip ‘n Slime!
Players
Two teams of 2-5 players each. A referee and scorekeeper are also recommended for this event.
Objective
To score the most points within the time limit by driving the Clucky Puck (chicken) into your team’s goal in your opponent’s end of the court, by throwing snowballs at the chicken to knock it back.
Players
Event for solo players. Team scoring is optional.
Objective
To knock down as many Zombie, Skeleton and Spider target paintings as possible with well-aimed arrows fired from a moving minecart, while avoiding the innocent Pig targets.
Players
There are no player limits to this event. Teams are optional. Enough materials are provided for up to 16 players, and more players can be supported.
Objective
To be the first player to successfully navigate by boat around the main continent of Minoa and return across the finish line. Full color navigation map included with download.
* Same course formerly available as a stand-alone map, more info available here.
This is the ultimate endurance event, and also a very relaxing and pleasant adventure. There’s no better way to explore the beautiful and mysterious world of Minerva. When crossing the finish line, the satisfaction of completing a dangerous journey around the entire massive island of Minoa is one of the more rewarding experiences Minecraft has to offer.
The approximate length of the Minerva Cup is over 13 nautical km (13,375m), and the current record is 45 minutes (2 ½ in-game days).
Awards Ceremony
After all events are concluded and the winners determined, the Awards Ceremony is held to recognize the players with the most valuable awards.
The three players with the highest awards at the end of the Criswelympics take their places on the awards podium for photos and to receive their honors.
Bonus Challenge: Criswelympic Dungeon Adventure
Deep beneath the Criswelympic Event Grounds lies buried a terrible dark secret. The grounds have long been haunted by a menagerie of horrors that seem to originate from within the caves running under the entire area.
As a bonus challenge to those not satisfied with mere sport: perhaps you can uncover the secret locations of the 9 Criswelympic Dungeons and free the souls of the defeated athletes of past games that cry out in torment? The entrances lie hidden across the event grounds shown on the map. There may be some valuable treasures to find as well, and no shortage of adventure!
Further Exploration
Beyond the Criswelympic Event Grounds lies the vast world of Minerva to explore and exploit as you see fit. There are many isolated structures around that can be used as bases from which to expand. The 8-minute train tour of the main continent is an easy way to earn your minecart achievement. An extensive Nether portal system will take you to dozens of areas to explore spanning 3 large continents, an enormous world with hundreds of things to discover, including the full Criswelvania map, loaded with treasure and thrilling adventure (Criswelvania Player Guide available here). The Nether itself has 32 secret chests tucked away -- how may can you find? Visit the Western Ziggurat, Embersted, and the Sacred Caves!
As an added bonus, a full-resolution 9040x7824 annotated map of the entire world is included to help you with your explorations.
New in v1.5.0
Release of new map with 11 events for testing!
First Edition Rulebook completed
F.A.Q.s & Troubleshooting Q: Does Criswelympics install or require any mods or texture packs? A: No, Criswelympics runs on vanilla Minecraft and is maintained to be 100% compatible with the current version. Texture packs and mods are purely optional and officially unsupported, and may cause unexpected results.
Q: I can’t load the map! Where do I install this? A: The map must be installed in your Application Data\.minecraft\saves folder, in Windows this is in your Documents and Settings directory. Searching for %Application Data% will locate it for you.
Upon installation, make sure that the World folder is in the .minecraft/saves directory, and that the World folder was not double-nested upon extraction (i.e.: "Criswelympics 1.5.0" folder with level.dat should not be inside another folder inside /saves). Do NOT create a new folder when extracting.
Q: I'm spawning somewhere weird! The map is broken! I don't know where I am or where to go! A: Anyone having troubles getting started, post or PM me as much information about your setup as you can: which MC version/mode, any mods in use, which links you've tried, and most helpfully a daylight screenshot of a distinctive landmark where you are spawning, and I'll try to troubleshoot.
Some general suggestions: If lost, use the maps provided, and follow signs and roads if visible. If you suspect the map is broken or corrupt, try deleting and re-extracting the Criswelympics world folder, or download the file again from one of the other mirrors provided.
Feedback greatly appreciated, Playthroughs too! Link your vidoes here for a free like + subscribe and I will add your videos to the Official Criswelympics Playlist.
I should add that there is plenty do to in Single-player as well. Many events, such as Slip 'n Slime, TNT Jump and Dart Critique work just fine as single-player games, and most of the other events can at least be attempted for practice. As a bonus, there is a huge underground adventure to be discovered as you explore the park, and an enormous world and huge Nether full of surprises awaiting beyond that!
Thank you for your encouraging words, I create for the enjoyment of people like you! I hope you enjoy this latest offering as well, and please let me know if anything needs adjustment.
This was somewhat of an ambitious project so I rather hope the little details work according to plan, but I'm prepared to follow up if there are any unforeseen problems in SMP I hadn't caught, or any modifications to the existing rules that need tweaking.
Amazing, Fantastic! Good job I must say, but I would like to see a spleef arena of some sorts.
Doesn't everybody already have a spleef arena? :smile.gif: Also Pyromania is more or less my twist on that game.
Yes I suppose that's that's a good point. Anyways, I was interesting by this map and was wondering if you needed any help with building, or just playing and testing it for maps. I could also run a public server using this map and have rankings and all that. Reply if you are interested in this please.

Yes totally! This map really needs some testing in SMP and some feedback. If you set up a server, pm me a time and IP and I'll do my best to make it. I am in Pacific Time and may need a couple of hours' heads-up to set aside the time slot, thanks in advance!
Okay, thanks again Mzaq for hosting the test of this map today. For the record, we were able to test Pig-Pollo, Monster Melee, Pyromania, TNT Jump and Farm-Fishing with a few handy mods installed before quitting time.
It seems lag will be a big issue in some of these games, I had trouble mounting saddled pigs occasionally and it was also difficult to catch animals with the fishing rods for me because of it. TNT Jump and Monster Melee seem to work well though (fun and funny too), and I think Pyromania would've gone better if I hadn't tried to chat from a burning tower of wool :tongue.gif: but Pyromania needs a quicker way to reset so I'll have to put some thought into how that should work. Pig-Pollo and Farm-Fishing I need to test further to see how bad the latency issue is. A brief test of Clucky Puck and Basketbawk suggest they should work fine but they didn't really get a thorough run.
Hope to test the other events in the next couple days and then I'll probably make some tweaks. If you are running this map and an event seems to be broken or stupid, feel free to move on to the next, lag only causes problems for some events.
...wow. These maps definitely deserve more attention than they've been getting. I'm astounded by the level of effort and creativity you've put into them. Hats off to you!
Why not make this to a server event, and inviting Notch, Yogscast and a lot other of people. I do have a server, Yogscast are easy to make come there...

How about Minelympics.dyndns.org as the ip?
Or Criswelympics.dyndns.org ?
Please reply!
Why the heck not? Sounds awesome, I would be humbled to have such luminaries stomping around my map.
If you put up such a server, invite me and Mzaq (if he's down) for a pre-game demo. Mzaq has good suggestions on server mods, I'll try and get together with him to make a list of recommended server tools. Still not sure what the maximum ping should be but some events (notably Farm Fishing, possibly Pig-Pollo) should definitely have ping requirements for the participants or it will be a frustrating experience.
What's your timeline on this? I can get some support together for next weekend, this week is pretty booked for me.
Verdict: Do like. The fact that you've placed the Olympics (tri-nitro jump being a particular favourate) and Criswelvania into one package is quite a spectacular feat, and there a quite a few little diversions for players bored of the distance. There are no issues with the games nor the adventure section as such, but I do have two issues with the map. The first isn't really an issue, but I'll put it here anyway: Space management. The sheer size of the map is Internet-crippling, yet 90% of that is pure wilderness. The second point is about Criswelvania. Without the map, it is near-impossible to navigate between the two places, because of the distance between them. Would it be possible to give signs, or little markers?
Now here's my idea: A minecart race. Obviously, they would have to work very differently to real-life races. Two competitors are sat in minecarts (with a powered minecart as well? Not sure) and have to complete a pre-specified number of laps. However, in order to push their carts to the highest possible level of speed, players have to activate buttons on the track to activate boosters. Levers control the direction the players travel, with some routes containing less boosters or taking a less direct route.

I do have a minecart race in mind, pretty similar to this idea, with adjacent tracks and levers that can affect either your or your opponents path. Add in some mulligans like tnt traps or other ruses to allow Mario Cart-like antics. Now I'm more certain people would play it, I'll make it. A lot of event ideas that didn't make the cut in 1.5 were either too involved to put into a map that might just flop based on premise alone, or just not distinctive enough, like Spleef. If there is popular demand I may include it later, if someone wants to donate an arena schematic that you have made, I may choose to incorporate it into the map, with due credit to the builder(s) of course. It will have to be pretty dang sexy though.
Some other events I'm pondering: Demo Reel: Opponents armed with fishing rods must use the rods to trigger their opponent's 3 TNT plates, destroying their control zones. Still debating having this event take place on foot in a more tactical arena, or from a minecart rail for the added challenge of hitting the target while in motion. Insanaquarium: a completely underwater PvP combat arena, I've got several great ideas about this. Scavenger Cake: Teams must find all ingredients to make a cake, first done wins. There will be challenge zones in which each ingredient will be available. Arrow Golf: This has been done but I have some ideas on a course. The limitation imposed on this game is that arrows become invisible past a short distance (16 blocks?) so making it work will take some tinkering. Angler Management: Just good old-fashioned fishin' and stealin' and brawlin' on top of a pole! Sprint/Countersprint: a combat footrace with teams running around a walled track in opposite directions for laps. The teams' starting lines would be at opposite ends of the looped figure-8 track. One possibility I have in mind is that the teams must advance a minecart around the track like a TF2 Payload map, but the original idea for score would be 1 point per lap, per team member.
There's a few more ideas kicking around but these are ones I definitely planned to add if the map actually turned out well. I may consider adding some requested features as well. I need to add more spectator seating if the map gets serious play.
@Rarrasdas: The carnival idea is interesting, what kinds of attractions do you see it having? I would imagine a shooting range, rollercoaster, Hall of Mirrors/Glass, log ride?
@fuzzehthehydra: When you say "internet crippling" you mean the size of the map significantly impacts server performance? I'm surprised that would be an issue, since surely some SMP servers are at least as big. I guess maybe everyone normally builds close together? I like to explore more than anything else in Minecraft, so my map got pretty huge. The Minerva Cup is the sea route around the whole thing, so I can't really trim the map without excluding that, interrupting railways, and rendering most of the Nether pointless. Part of my intention with releasing the full map was to give players a large pre-generated area in which to expand, with many random functional structures scattered around to utilize at need, and make discovery more varied than strictly dungeons n' diamonds, which is all well and good.
But the real point of each map should be, to be able to enjoy the main activities as designed. I did already note a lag issue on some events. If this causes serious performance issues for some, I have no problem releasing a "lite" version of each map with the extras trimmed out. Does anyone else want this? It would necessarily exclude Criswelvania and the Minerva Cup Regatta. I could make a Criswelvania lite version as well.
Now, expanding on the idea of the full map, I do plan to add more signs and directional aids in future versions. My current plan with this map is to release an updated Minerva map with every major Minecraft update (the Minerva Cup Regatta was my 1.4 release). As far as locating Criswelvania, you can't reach it by rail or by foot unless you want to swim there. At about the halfway point of the Minerva Cup Regatta, you will pass South of it -- this is the most fun way to reach it. The fastest way to get there is by Nether:
1. Enter Fort Redoubt, just N. of Southpoint (worldspawn), find and enter the Portal.
2. In the Nether, head N. (huge magma sea will be on your Right), across the bridge, you will come to the Embersted Gatehouse but do not enter.
3. Head down the stairs in front of you, and follow the path E. across the long bridge over the magma sea.
4. You will find the Point Providence Gatehouse once across but pass it by. Take the flaming path and continue E. up the stairway, at the top continue E., do not take the stairs immediately S. You will come to a cave marked by torches.
5. Enter the cave, tend E. then N. at the first bend, descending the stepped cavern. When it levels out there is an opening E. Through this and immediately N. you should see the outside. There are often some Pig Zombies here. Head out the opening and down the rough steps that skirt the edge of the cliff. To the North you should be able to see the Criswelvania Gatehouse. Leave your belongings in the chest there and enter the Portal. You will arrive in the Caves of Confusion.
6. Despite the name it is easy to exit the Caves as long as you don't misstep over the large cascading pit. Follow the signs, climb the ladder to the ice, head up the stairs and through the gate, you are at the start of Criswelvania!
I probably will make a lite version for the next release just as a test offering. The world size has doubled since this version due to an extended voyage, charting out the next Minerva Cup Regatta course, making the unzipped world ~500MB. Not many MC worlds have over 30 sq.km. of contiguous map area (no whitespace) and a navigable water route of over 40 nautical kilometers, but for a quick and fun game it is overkill.
MC Beta 1.6 has probably broken a few things so until I can get an update out, some features like railways and some ladders may not work as intended. Not had a chance to test anything yet, it's going to be a couple weeks but I will be releasing at least a small update to most of my maps.

Further Exploration
Beyond the Criswelympic Event Grounds lies the vast world of Minerva to explore and exploit as you see fit. There are many isolated structures around that can be used as bases from which to expand. F.A.Q.s & Troubleshooting
Q: Does Criswelympics install or require any mods or texture packs?
This is definitely taking Minecraft to new levels.
Nice work.

Some other events I'm pondering:
Demo Reel: Opponents armed with fishing rods must use the rods to trigger their opponent's 3 TNT plates, destroying their control zones.
Follow the signs, climb the ladder to the ice, head up the stairs and through the gate, you are at the start of Criswelvania!
e: Rarrasdas thanks for putting that up, I'll check it out later today!
e2: Wow some server plugins make all the difference. Choosing some official recommended mods is moving up on the to-do list.
They do make me lag though!
MC Beta 1.6 has probably broken a few things so until I can get an update out, some features like railways and some ladders may not work as intended. Not had a chance to test anything yet, it's going to be a couple weeks but I will be releasing at least a small update to most of my maps.
