With largest gang bust ever, the NYPD shows off new ways to get the job done

Kudos to the NYPD and the feds for a historic mass takedown of two criminal gangs that have been terrorizing the North Bronx for years — leaving a trail of murder and drug sales in their wake.

More than 100 members of the 2Fly gang — a local faction of the nationwide Young Gunnaz — and the Big Money Bosses were arrested before dawn Wednesday and indicted on federal racketeering charges.

It’s the city’s largest single gang mass arrest ever, but it’s only the latest in a series of NYPD crackdowns on gangs that Police Commissioner Bill Bratton says are responsible for half of New York City’s gun crimes.

Those charged are suspected in at least eight homicides, as well as hundreds or more drug sales, many preying on children near schools and parks.

Their murder victims ranged in age from 15 to 92, according to prosecutors.

The Big Money suspects — who rank members by such fashion-plate monikers as Burberry Suits, Gucci Suits and Ferragamo Suits — were also charged with bank fraud, counterfeiting and other white-collar crimes.

That fits Bratton’s warning last winter that the city’s 375 known gangs have moved into higher-level schemes.

The active involvement of the feds — the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Department of Homeland Security — is welcome. It suggests a new level of cooperation and allows for much harsher sentences.

With anti-cop hysteria unabated in some quarters, it’s a reminder that the NYPD gets the job done. New York’s streets — safe as they already are — just got a whole lot safer.
