The Walking Dead features plenty of blood and guts, but one particular scene was almost too much for star Lauren Cohan. The actress, who plays Maggie on the hit AMC zombie drama, reveals during her upcoming appearance on Inside the Actors Studio that she considered quitting in season 3 after reading a particularly gruesome part of the script that involved her character.

The scene in question? When Maggie performed a C-section on a very much alive Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) to deliver baby Judith as Carl (Chandler Riggs) watched.

The actress said after reading the act, she went to costar Steven Yeun, who plays her husband, Glenn. “I knock on Steven’s door, and I said, ‘I have to leave the show. I don’t think I can do it,’” recalled Cohan, who explained she and her castmates all live in the same apartment building. “It affects you so deeply to the core to touch on … to dive into so much of this material.”

The 34-year-old actress, who is currently starring in horror film The Boy, added, “And then I realized that’s why I have to do it … we watch to feel and to hopefully, honestly portray something. And bad stuff happens, and what’s the point in not getting real about it?”

Terrible things do indeed happen, especially on the drama, which has killed off plenty of its fan-favorite characters. (RIP, Beth, Hershel et al.) And with the upcoming arrival of baddie Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), things are about to get nastier.

“[The finale] is maybe the darkest bit of writing I’ve ever read,” Ross Marquand, who plays Aaron, told Us Weekly in November. “It is genuinely one of the craziest, most gut-wrenching episodes I’ve ever read in my life.”

Watch the cast of The Walking Dead on Inside the Actors Studio on Bravo Tuesday, February 9 at 8 p.m. EST. The Walking Dead returns for its midseason premiere on AMC Sunday, February 14, at 9 p.m. EST.
