Focus fast with high speed AF. To improve focusing speed and sensitivity, the Exmor® CMOS sensor uses its rapid throughput to deliver high-quality image signals to the camera's BIONZ® processor, which provides intelligent response data to a new high speed actuator motor in the lens. The result is fast, DSLR-like focusing speeds even in low light.
Full frame burst shooting
High speed continuous shooting at up to 5 frames per second (fps) is made possible by the BIONZ® processor and 24 megapixel sensor.
Three control lens rings
Full manual operation is intuitive on the RX1. Users can keep their eyes on the subject and concentrate on the composition while comfortably adjusting the dedicated aperture, focusing, and macro switching rings. Conveniently placed dials
Quick access to conveniently placed exposure compensation and focus mode dials.
Quick Navi – settings at a glance
Quick Navi enhances direct control of your favorite functions. Pressing the Fn button activates Quick Navi, which allows the user to check camera settings at a glance and promptly change settings without having to search for dedicated menus.
Memory recall
MR (memory recall) mode can memorize up to three groups of the user's preferred settings. Settings include zoom magnification, white balance, exposure compensation, shutter speed, drive mode and metering modes. This enables quick switching of settings at the right moment.
Nine aperture blades
Nine aperture blades form a nearly perfect circle throughout the normally used aperture range of F2 to F22, resulting in background defocusing that is smooth and genuinely beautiful.
Expandable with multi interface shoe
The multi interface shoe allows easy connection with wide-ranging accessories expanding the range of photographic expression. Available accessories include a powerful external flash unit, electronic viewfinder.

focusing operation.
Auto HDR mode
Captures more scene dynamic range than a single exposure can handle—and more range than photo film. Combines the best highlight detail from one shot, the best mid-tones from a second and the best shadow detail from a third for one incredible shot (up to 6 EV stops), all in a split second. (Recommended for still subjects.)
Dual-aspect ratio recording
for still images
Capture still images in either 3:2 or 16:9 aspect ratio. This provides the freedom to choose a ratio that matches the scene or the specific
shooting purpose.
Built in pop up flash
Enjoy the convenience of flash photography everywhere you go. Guide number is approximately 6. Choose from Auto, Slow Sync, Rear Sync, Fill-flash and Flash Off modes.
Capture JPEG files, RAW files, or both
The DSC-RX1 saves pictures as compact JPEG files and/or ultra-high quality RAW files. RAW files save images prior to de-mosaicing, white balance, sharpness and color enhancement. This retains maximum latitude for enhancing the image on your PC. Three focusing modes
This camera has one Autofocus mode, Single-shot AF (AF). It also has Manual Focus (MF) for manual focusing freedom, and Direct Manual Focus (DMF), that first uses autofocusing to focus on the subject, and then allows fast and easy switching to manual focusing for even more precise adjustment.
Digital level gauge
Digital level gauge to allow easier leveling

Customers are mixed about the focus of the camera. Some mention that the autofocus system is improved relative to the RX-1 with phase detection on sensor, making it very easy to focus and zoom for critical focus after your initial point of focus. However, others say that the camera has slow autofocus and does not give us phase detect focusing like the NEX-6. This can make focusing in even moderately low light an exercise in frustration, as the camera focuses on the background.

The key thing here is that this lens and sensor were made specifically and precisely for each other. This is true for those items and the processor as well. And that is very important. These are not just a collection of parts. They were MATCHED in function and performance to each other. The obvious benefit in that approach is that the performance can exceed a "sum of the parts" approach. No, you cannot change out lenses, but that is the very characteristic that gives the RX1 its uncompromised image quality and a slight advantage over some of todays best dslrs in ISO spanning image quality.
Now onto the low light focusing. I'm just a hack, and forgive me if this is common knowledge, but here's what I found ... In low light auto focusing, my RX1 is rougly equivalent to my RX100 which is a champ. Does that mean that low light focusing is comparably fast to bright light focusing? No, I don't know of too many cameras that do not suffer some in focusing speed as the light goes down. But I still am not seeing any auto focus attempts that take longer than a half to three-quarters of a second. I suspect that is because I always seek edges to center focus on ... vertical or horizontal ... But always edges. The RX1 does not give us phase detect focusing like my NEX-6 (on certain lenses) ... We only have contrast detect to auto focus with. It's okay to grab a center focus on a contrast area then recompose but we gotta have some contrast in a small area to get it. Otherwise we're stuck with manual focus and peaking ... but peaking also needs at least some semblance of an edge. So by looking for a few pixels in the scene that have some contrast and grabbing focus on them, I simply don't have the low light focus issues I read about. It's a work around but it's quick.
At any rate, I am very happy with this camera. If you check out the link I referenced above, you can see the exact differences in crops from the RX1 and the current leading dslrs ... at escalating ISOs. Very revealing just how mighty this little guy is. Words cannot express what those image comparisons show through the ISO range. After seeing those, I personally did not mind so much that a viewfinder was not included, etc. Besides the LCD on the RX1 uses the same "White Magic" high contrast technology as the RX100, and I have never had a problem in sunlight seeing that display clearly. Not saying this is adequate for everyone, but it's enough for me. I also would prefer an EVF like my NEX-6, but I will do what I have to do in order to get the images the RX1 produces.
On build quality, the RX1 is built like a tank. I have been a design engineer for products like these most of my life, and I can tell they threw away all the restrictions when they designed this unit and selected its materials. But the thing that sealed it for me was the image comparisons with those reigning champion dslrs on the imaging-resources review. It's still like I'm in a dream ... How is it possible that that small chunk of metal can get better IQ than those cameras at so many ISOs. This is one of those rare buys where I think I am only going to feel better about this as time goes by. I am a street photographer so the permanently affixed f2 is not a problem for me .... I just use my Nike sneakers "zoom control" to get the shot I'm after. Very pleased with this camera. It may not have every box checked for your list, but if a combination of superb image quality, uncompromised engineering and portability are important to you then it doesn't get better than this at present. I could wait for a future interchangeable lens model, but I actually like the fact that this design forces me to think differently about what I "need" for a shot. With its capabilities, small size, no worries about setup for shots, etc I am ready for most moments in time to capture them. I wanted something that literally feels like an extension of my hand. This is it.
Today in 2018 a new Sony A7 FF camera is about 800 US dollars. So yes a lot has changed. Even six years later there are still no additional options for a small full frame camera with a fixed lens. It's still a Sony only game. The Leica Q is a sweet camera but it's large in my opinion and in no way compact. The camera is also roughly 1,200-1500 US dollars more. Nothing from Fuji, Canon, Nikon, or Panasonic to answer the RX1.
So when I came across the chance to own the RX1 WITH the OLED view finder for 1,000 even I had to do it. What did it replace? the original Fuji X100 launched in 2011 that I purchased used in 2013. The X100 has been my carry around camera, but also came with me for paid work for nearly five years.
Why move on? The Fuji is using a very old sensor, it's a reworked 12MP sensor from the Sony A700/Nikon D300, from 2007 and it's long in tooth. Also, it has a 23mm lens, and the f2 aperture in FF terms is more like f2.8 or 3.2. I also still shoot with 2 Nikon D700 bodies so I will compare to these as well.
PROS:
1. Made in Japan! Yes some may argue that it means nothing, but it does to me. Camera makers are moving away from Japan and to China, the list of Japan made cameras and lenses is getting short.
2. Mostly metal construction.
3. That FF sensor. Yes it's showing its age, but it's still usually brilliant.
4. That lens. It's a real 35MM lens and a real F2 aperture so compared to crop sensor versions, it's a bit easier to defocus the background when desired. The Zeiss is sharp, with a wonderful contrasty lens. The bokeh is usually smooth, flare is well controlled and it's just an all around sweet little thing.
5. That silent leaf shutter. Also it can shoot at high shutter speeds with the built in flash, something my DSLR can't do.
6. A nice balance of megapixels and sensor size.
7. A decent number of features, like HDR modes, brackets, focus peaking, panos, multiframe noise reduction. BUT issues with this make the CONS list. For me the multiframe NR is very useful. It works handheld in low light with still subjects and the images are cleaner than RAW shots even when I work them over in lightroom with noise reduction. Taking photos on night walks is a breeze with this.
8. The size! It sits lower than my Fuji X100, and it's not as wide, only the lens sticks out roughly 1/4 of an inch more give or take.
9. The feel of metal dials, the clicks they make, and the overall quality of the camera.
10. It's low key. If that's a pro for you, well there you go. It's small, black and plain and it's silent so people just don't care about it, and don't notice you, and nobody will ask you about it.
CONS:
1. Autofocus in very low light, it will hunt and it will miss. Just accept it. In low light it usually gets it, but if you struggle to see with your eyes you will need to switch over to manual and the brilliant zoom feature will save you. the speed seems a tad quicker than my Fuji X100, both are very accurate.
2. The batteries. Why Sony went with something so tiny is mind boggling. Same for the mark II. Yes the camera is tiny, but they could have put in a slightly larger battery. Silver lining, currently third party batteries are cheap, and in most cases they have up to 20 percent more juice. I can fit two in that tiny little fifth pocket in my jeans.
3. No built in viewfinder. Sony put one in the mark II, so they could have done it here in the mark 1 but chose not to. Was it to rush the camera to market? Was it a ploy to sell the OLED viewfinders? Don't care, it's a con. I own the finder and for little events I keep the finder on and it's fine. But in the bag the finder is off because risk damage if you keep it on. So for quick candid shots out of the bag there is no time to attach the view finder.
4. No built in WiFi to shoot images over to your phone for a quick share. The work around is a Toshiba FlashAir card. I have the third gen, it worked perfect with my Fuji and it works great with the RX1.
5. Compressed RAW. The only time I can see issues are in defocused areas at times don't have smooth transitions in the RAW files. I have never seen this, not with my Sony A100, A700, Nikon D700 or my Fuji. It's a strange look at times, reminds me of Jpeg compression artifacts. It's not always visible, but it's a thing sometimes.
6. Auto ISO. You can't set up AUTO ISO the way you can in a standard DSLR. You can't set min shutter speeds. Very annoying. The work around is shooting in manual mode with auto ISO on. Some people still won't like it. This works fine for me.
7. No firmware updates from Sony. Not one, not ever. That's sad. Sony gave my old A700 a total of four firmware updates about 2 plus years after the camera was launched. The RX1 was twice the price and gave it no support. Why? To protect the sales of the next model?
8. The video. Yes it blows away the Fuji X100, but the X100 video was and still is hot garbage. For the time it was just OK, today, cheaper cameras with smaller sensors and cheaper prices have better video quality. To me it's fine, I shoot short clips, and it's nice to shoot at F2 (when conditions allow) it can look pretty nice at or below ISO 1600.
9. The built in flash. Oh if that little flash would let you tilt that little flash head up for a nice bounce, it would be a PRO not a CON. Maybe. The X100 is very smart in the flash dept, it just works as well as on camera flash can work. The flash of the RX1 reminds me of DSLR built in flash, it's just a big fat blast of light, and it usually looks harsh.
10. The OLED viewfinder is good not great. I know it's a separate but I'm including it. It's a hassle to carry. It has a nice little case though.
11. No built in ND filter. On sunny days you can't always shoot at f2, you will need to stop down. Carrying an ND filter? I don't think so.
Final thoughts, I'm sure I can add more PROS and CONS, but I think I hit the major points. The files coming out of my ancient Nikon D700 are still smoother and more creamy from base ISO to around 1600 when both cameras are properly exposed.
Over ISO 1,000 things favor the RX1 when you over or under expose. The RX1 can usually pull things back. The D700 file is more fragile. From ISO 1600 to 6400 the RX1 is generally cleaner and you can push and pull on the RAW files more than the D700. Having twice the pixel count on the RX1 is nice too.
Bottom line, even with all the cons, I am very happy with the RX1 and have worked around most of the issues. It's a powerhouse in a tiny package.
