Use this spreadsheet with your team while you moderate and they observe UX studies.

Step 1Copy this spreadsheet (File > Make a copy).

Step 2Customize it to your study.

Step 3Share it with your team. Explain how they should use it.

Step 4Fill in participant information based on your recruiting information before the study starts (4th sheet).

Step 5Identify UX metrics to monitor during the study and add them to the 3rd sheet. Feel free to edit what this template offers.

Step 6Instruct the team to add observations, not conclusions, into the 2nd sheet. For each observation, color the cell of the study participant. If the same observation occurs for another participant, color his or her cell as well.

Step 7As the moderator, add observations and color cells too during the session. Make sure your team does so too. If not, ping them through IM and ask them to add their observations. Usually, if you start, they'll follow you.

Step 8Fill in metrics (3rd sheet) during each session.

Step 9Schedule 45 minute breaks between study sessions. Discuss observations with your team during these breaks. No solutions yet!

Step 10Anyone can add their raw notes to the last sheet.

Step 11If the study was video recorded, add videos to Google Docs, and add the URLs of the videos to the Participants sheet.
