Why sex is better than ever at 69... and why Prime Suspect's Jane Tennison has probably gone gay, by Dame Helen

She may have set male pulses pounding for decades, but Dame Helen Mirren has surprisingly confessed that she has only found true sexual fulfilment in her 60s.

The sultry actress, who has appeared nude in at least nine films, had a string of lovers including actors Liam Neeson and Nicol Williamson before marrying American director Taylor Hackford in 1997 when she was 53. And now she says her sex life is better than ever.

In an interview in today’s Event magazine, Dame Helen, who will turn 70 this summer, says sex was ‘paranoid and empty’ in her youth, but is now ‘great, just wonderful’.

The Oscar-winning actress has admitted to setting her alarm an hour early so she can make love to her husband.

Dame Helen provides another surprise in today’s interview when she recalls her acclaimed role as hard-bitten detective Jane Tennison in the TV crime series Prime Suspect, and is asked what she imagines the character would be doing now.

She says Tennison would have ‘gone gay’ in her retirement.

‘She’s a lesbian, living with a very attractive partner. She gave up the drinking the moment she left the office and never went back to it. She does yoga.

‘I would imagine she is still working, either advising or lecturing. I don’t think she can stop – she’s too driven.’

Dame Helen, also famous for screen and stage depictions of the Queen, now has her eyes on a totally different role – as a merciless warrior in fantasy blockbuster Game Of Thrones.

‘Very cold and cruel… I’d love that,’ she says.
