Wow, this is a sharp, fast lens. I am using it on a DX body Nikon D5500 and it is terrific. Because it is an FX format professional lens designed to paint a bigger sensor, it has absolutely no trouble being incredibly sharp and bright all the way out to the farthest corners on the D5500, a DX format prosumer camera. The lens feels bright enough to take a picture in a black hole. And the bokeh is creamy and absolutely beautiful (see example photos which give examples of bokeh and also show the lens on the D5500 and unmounted).
But it is not a beginner lens for three reasons. First, it is not inexpensive - not crazy pricey, but not an impulse purchase either. Second, it is totally and completely manual on the modern DSLR cameras. You have to put the camera into full manual mode to even get it to take a picture and then you set the aperture by hand using the aperture ring (remember those?, but oh, my lord, is it a treat to be able to drop all the way down to f1.2!) and then you have to set the shutter speed (and ISO if desired) manually, and then of course you have to focus it manually. Thirdly, when it is opened way up, the focal plane feels like it is about 1mm deep on closer-up portraits where the subject is inside of 10 feet or so. Someone with more skill than me could calculate how deep it actually is, but suffice it to say that it is really shallow. It is possible to have a person whose face is slightly at an angle to the camera (rather than facing straight-on) have one eye in sharp focus and the other one softly out of focus with a little bokeh on the eye glint. It is that shallow. Of course the artistic possibilities there are enormous, but if you are going to use it for portraits when it is wide open, you really need to pay attention to focus.
Final point I will make is that for a very small and compact lens with a 52mm filter diameter, this is one seriously heavy little item. It is not that it is heavy, uncomfortable or unbalanced to use, so much that it feels dense. It is just beautifully made and feels totally solid, as if its volume is 49% glass, 49% metal, and 2% oil with no air gaps. The result is smooth, solid and durable feeling - I could imagine this lens working as flawlessly as new in 30 years' time if treated with care.
So, is it a great everyday lens for general purpose lens? In the hands of an experienced photographer, sure maybe if you need the fastest manual 50mm lens you can get, but in truth, a beginner might be more comfortable with one of Nikon's modern autofocus f1.4 or f1.8 G series fully automatic lens. But for bokeh monsters, advanced hobbyists, and lens lovers, I recommend it highly!

If you're looking for a soft subject, in a sort of dreamy look, with soft, creamy bokeh behind you, then you may be able to work with this lens wide open and enjoy what it offers. If you enjoy adding some vignetting into your photos anyway, then that issue won't bother you so much...and you can always mitigate it in post. At f/1.2 depth of field is razor thin, so accurate focusing is paramount. If you can nail the focus and accurate place the depth of field where you want it on your subject, you could work some magic with this lens at its widest apertures.
All that said, you can get good use out of this lens as an every-day, journalistic type lens at its medium apertures (i.e. f/4, f/5.6). It's image quality is all around best in this range, as the images are very sharp, there is no noticeable aberration or color fringing, and vignetting is gone. The corners remain sharp, and there is no light falloff as you go from center to corner.
As is typical of Nikon quality, focusing is a pleasure. The focus ring turns with smooth ease, and if you prefer to focus and recompose, the focus ring will stay put where you leave it while you adjust the camera's placement.
Given that it's a 50mm lens, its pretty small, but not the lightest 50mm out there...I'm assuming thats due to the extra glass needed to crank out f/1.2.
Once you get used to how this lens responds at its different apertures, its surprising how flexible it is in what it can produce for you.
This lens bears no resemblance to the performance of the famous Noct. Don't think that just because they both open up to f/1.2 that the results are similar...you'll be very disappointed. And, as I said before, if you expect this lens to shoot a standard image quality shot that the 50 1.4 will get you at 1.4, you will again be disappointed. This lens sets you up for a lot of work to be done at 1.2, but if you nail the shot, you will be rewarded with some unique imagery.
This is a great lens for an experienced photographer who enjoys working with shallow depth of field and isolating subjects from a creamy bokeh background.
It’s a manual lens, no auto focus but the manual focus ring is buttery smooth with a longer focus throw than new lenses. On the RED Gemini this thing is a B-Roll monster. I do a lot of sports documentary and BTS at professional sporting events and this lens is always on my packing list. Super sharp, great color and contrast. The lens has character and gives a great image.
