ROCKPORT — Rockport Library Director Ann Filley said in a press release that she is stepping down from the position she has held for just over a year since Friday's announcement.

Filley became director on May 30, 2014, and she has resigned the position effective Aug. 14.

The current deputy director, Ben Blackmon, has been selected to serve as interim library director effective in August, when Filley departs. Filley is expected to continue to work temporarily for the library in a part-time capacity to provide support during the transition.

"This has been the best job I have ever held and I continue to feel so honored to be part of this great public institution," said Filley in the release.

Filley started working at the library in 2010. She became deputy director in 2012 and then interim director in 2013, followed by becoming the director in 2014. During her time as director, she continued the library's commitment of offering an array of programs and new services, while the library staff welcomed and assisted visitors.

Blackmon received his master's degree in library science in 2012 and has been working for the Rockport Public Library since 2013. In his role at the library he has been responsible for much of the adult programming, which brings people into the library, focusing on community needs and interests.

"Rockport has a great tradition of entrepreneurship and the library offers a way to provide support and information, while combining library services with new and available technology," said Blackmon. "We see more people needing and wanting access to technology as well as all the free cultural events that occur in libraries today."

Blackmon said in the release that he is especially excited by what is ahead for the building and the community, and that it will be a challenge to make sure that a new building accommodates the current program needs as well as the needs for the next 20 to 30 years.
