William (Bill) Potter was honored Dec. 1 by members of the Woolwich board of selectmen. Potter received the Spirit of America Foundation Tribute for his service to the Woolwich community.

Reading from a resolution on behalf of the other board members, Chairman David A. King Sr., cited Potter’s long standing service on the town’s Fish Commission and his “countless hours” in working with concerned parties on behalf of the Fish House and Smoke House which are vital to the annual alewives migration.

Potter’s work with the alewife harvesting contractor in keeping records each year and his work in replacing the fish ladder were mentioned in the detailed resolution which expressed Woolwich’s appreciation.

Airport update

Ervin Deck, Manager of the neighboring Wiscasset Airport, was invited to the meeting to provide an update on the facility.

The airport has a fully paved and lighted 3400-foot runway and is the only airport in the Midcoast area south of Knox County. Deck informed the board that, although at one time there had been discussion about lengthening the runway, there is currently no plan to do so.

The runway at Wiscasset is believed to be adequate for current and future needs because the airport located in Brunswick has the capacity to support aircraft needing a longer runway.

Trees growing at both ends of the runway may become a future concern. The trees need to be cleared and may be on privately owned property.

According to Deck, this is not expected to be an immediate problem and the airport will have several years in which to resolve this issue with the abutting property owners.
