G. VIGEANT SR., CHICAGO PIONEER ARCHITECT, DIES
Gregory Vigeant, one of Chicago's earliest and most noted architects, died at his home, 1216 Astor street, yesterday, after a long illness. He was born in Marysville, Que., in 1853, and came to Chicago when about 20 years old. For many years he specialized in the building of churches.
Notre Dame church, at Sibley street and Vernon park, where night and day a shrine will be kept by the Order of the Fathers of the Blessed Sacrament, beginning with adoration services this morning, was one of the numerous churches which Mr. Vigeant built. He also constructed the first large hotel in Chicago, now know as the Victoria hotel.
For the last several years Mr. Vigeant lived in Georgia, where he went to recuperate after a nervous breakdown caused by overwork. He is survived by Mrs. Vigeant, three sons, Capt. Gregory Vigeant, Jr., Xavier Vigeant, and Pierre Vigeant, and one daughter, Marie. The two elder sons are also engaged in architecture, being members of the firm of Labbenbaum, Marx & Vigeant.
Burial was at the family lot in Graceland cemetery.
