Stop Healthcare Waste Being Disposed of In Landfills in Canada.
Why this petition matters
Our Health matters. The spread of disease is now an epidemic.
Healthcare waste (hospitals, funeral homes, labs, care homes) disposal going to landfills contains potentially infectious waste.
Biomedical waste managed under Regulations in Ontario accounts for only 7% of the waste that is generated in a hospital and is treated (autoclave or incinerated). Another 34% is diverted (recycled, reuse, compost).
59% is disposed of in landfills, which contain potentially harmful micro-organisms from: dressings, incontinent products, blood spotted bedding/wipes and cleaning materials.
1 in every 25 patient in a hospital has an infection stated by the National Centre for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases. We are facing an epidemic of chronic diseases (Zikda virus, Ebola, Flesh-Eating, Staph, etc.). How does a nurse, cleaner, disposing of waste know if it is infectious or not?

We now have patients in the homes, and what was classified as medical waste is now municipal garbage. This is another issue to managing this waste as well.
Total destruction of healthcare waste is required, which can be done through Energy from Waste.
To stop the disposal of healthcare waste in landfills, Government needs to change regulations, ensuring waste from healthcare facilities (except recycled/compost) be totally destroyed through Energy from Waste and not go to landfills.
