Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) volunteers are set to lend their helping hand in making Bangalore free from garbage. As part of this initiative, the AAP volunteers are launching - Freedom from Garbage - an initiative to segregate waste at source.

Speaking with media persons, Ravikrishna Reddy, convener of AAP Karnataka unit, blamed garbage mafia for the menace of garbage in the city. "BBMP has been spending Rs 400 crore for the transport of garbage from the city to the landfills at Mandur and Mavallipura every year. Because of the landfills at Mavallipura and Mandur, the groundwater in and around the area is polluted. Residents of those villages have been suffering from various ailments,'' Reddy said.

"The AAP volunteers would launch the initiative - Freedom from Garbage - at BTM Layout on Sunday. Freedom fighter HS Doreswamy and other dignitaries will attend the function,'' he added.

Shantala Damle of AAP said the volunteers of AAP would undertake door-to-door campaign to create awareness among the residents on the importance of segregation of waste at source. "The residents have to buy three types of plastic bins to keep the segregated waste at source. These plastic bins are being supplied by a NGO for Rs 100. It is not mandatory for the residents to buy these bins but it would be a great help for the residents. Segregation of waste at source is however mandatory as per the High Court order. It has to be followed by not only residents but also garbage contractors,'' Damle said.

Shidharth Sharma of AAP has said the initiative would be extended to other areas in the city as well. "We are planning to launch this initiative at Doddanekkundi on August 10 and later at Vidyaranyapura ward,'' Sharma said.

He said the AAP wants the initiative -- Freedom from Garbage - to be extended to all 198 wards of the BBMP to make Bangalore free from garbage menace.
