Blue lakes observed on Antarctica's ice sheets

In a first, scientists have found that atop the coastal Langhovde Glacier in Eastern Antarctica's Dronning Maud Land, nearly 8,000 meltwater lakes have formed between 2000 and 2013. In some cases these lakes have been found draining down into the floating parts of the glacier, potentially weakening the ice shelf and contributing to global sea level rise.
