Jim Carrey is leaving Facebook.
The actor announced that he would be deleting his account on the social network, as well as dumping his shares of Facebook stock, in a Twitter post on Tuesday. Carrey cited the site profiting from “Russian interference in our elections” as the source of his decision. He also urged other users to do the same.
“For a long time America enjoyed a geographical advantage in the world with oceans on both sides to protect it,” Carrey said in a lengthier statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter. “Now, social media has created cyber-bridges over which those who do not have our best interest in mind can cross and we are allowing it. No wall is going to protect us from that. We must encourage more oversight by the owners of these social media platforms. This easy access has to be more responsibly handled. What we need now are activist investors to send a message that responsible oversight is needed. What the world needs now is capitalism with a conscience.”
Facebook is one of several social media platforms, including Twitter and YouTube, that have come under fire for their role in spreading propaganda and fake news during the 2016 presidential election.
In September, the social media giant announced it would provide Congress with more than 3,000 ads that ran around the time of the 2016 presidential election on Facebook and are linked to a Russian ad agency. “As a general rule, we are limited in what we can discuss publicly about law enforcement investigations, so we may not always be able to share our findings publicly,” Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said. “But we support Congress in deciding how to best use this information to inform the public, and we expect the government to publish its findings when their investigation is complete.”
Facebook testified to Congress in October that Russian-backed content on its site had reached over 125 million Americans during, and after, the 2016 presidential election.
Carrey has been outspoken on the subject of possible Russian collusion in the 2016 election, tweeting that “The Trump Presidency is a botched Russian black op” and calling President Donald Trump a “one-man Gomorrah” following the recent false nuclear alarm in Hawaii.
Carrey’s Facebook page is still currently live.
