Pat Lynch was the Buffalo HS football coach until he resigned this week apologizing for having given his football players a survey on "hurt feelings" that included such choices as, "I am thin skinned...a pussy....have woman like (sic) hormones...a queer....a little bitch....a cry baby...." and then signature choices included "little sissy," "girly-man," and "real-man" but the school board allowed him to retain his position as a school counselor under "administrative supervision." The 2010 American School Counselor Association Code of Ethics (http://www.schoolcounselor.org/content.asp?contentid=136) states, "Professional school counselors are advocates, leaders, collaborators, and consultants who create opportunities for equity in access and success in educational opportunities....subscribing to the following tenets of professional responsibility: Each person has the right to be respected, treated with dignity, and have access to a comprehensive school counseling program that advocates for and affirms all students from diverse populations including: ethnic/racial identity, age, economic status, abilities/disabilities, language, immigration status, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, family type, religious/spiritual identity, and appearance." The students at Buffalo high school need an ethical, affirming, and competent school counselor. The district needs updated language and expectations for professional school counselors and school counseling programs; guidance is not a profession.
