Delhi: Three cops under scanner for ‘extortion’ from man robbed of diamonds

The three Special Cell personnel allegedly took money from a businessman who was robbed of diamonds worth Rs 2 crore on August 31, the sources added.

Delhi Police have started looking at an “extortion” allegation against three of their personnel posted in the Special Cell, said sources Monday.

The three Special Cell personnel allegedly took money from a businessman who was robbed of diamonds worth Rs 2 crore on August 31, the sources added.

The businessman had kept the diamonds in a bag on the rear seat of his car, said police. The robbers had punctured his car, forcing him to get down at a place in east Delhi. The robbers then broke the window of his car and fled with the bag, following which he informed police.

East district police Sunday claimed to have solved the robbery case. Police said they had arrested a person, identified as Vinay, and apprehended a juvenile in the case and recovered the diamonds.

Incidentally, when police worked out the case, the businessman told them that he had been contacted by policemen posted with the Special Cell and had paid them to get his diamonds back, said sources.

Festive offer

The businessman said they had claimed they had solved the case and demanded the money, the sources added.

Sources said the businessman told the East district police that an inspector, a sub-inspector and a constable posted with Special Cell “extorted” the money from him.
