The Grim Reaper is booking a round-trip ticket to Springfield — wherever that may be — for The Simpsons‘ Season 26 premiere this fall. Executive producers Al Jean and Matt Selman on Tuesday dropped a few new details about the impending death, including how permanent the character’s goodbye will be.

“This is going to be a bigger deal than King Joffrey on Game of Thrones — the Yellow Wedding!” Jean said during a conference call. “The character that dies is portrayed by an actor who won an Emmy for playing that character. People who reported on it then reported we were killing an ‘iconic’ character; I’d like to say it’s a great character, but I never used the word ‘iconic.’ It’s a terrific character and it [happens in] our premiere this coming year.”
But just because a character is dying, that doesn’t mean he (or she) won’t pop up in a future episode.
“We always have kind of a flexible reality,” Jean admitted, suggesting we could see the departed in a Halloween episode or in a dream sequence.
“What we told the performer is, ‘This does not mean the end of your participation in The Simpsons,'” Selman added. (And, for the record, there are people on the internet who have “figured out” the correct victim.)
Fortunately, there’s more than just gloom and/or doom in The Simpsons‘ future. This Sunday marks the show’s 550th episode (Fox, 8/7c), which will transform Homer and rest of Springfield’s resident into LEGOs. Several exciting events are also being planned for Season 26, including a Futurama/Simpsons crossover episode, “Simpsorama.”
Now that Jean and Selman are done giving out clues, it’s time to start guessing in the comment section below: Which regular Simpsons character should we prepare to say goodbye to?

so curious who the character will be!

Likely candidates: Apu, Sideshow Bob, Grandpa Simpson, Moe, Barney, Krusty, Comic Book Guy, Chief Wiggum, Duffman, Carl… And I can think of a plausible reason for all of them to die, even without having seen the show in 10 years.
Speculate away!
Of those, the only one I’d describe as “iconic” is Krusty. Maybe Apu or Moe.
Hank Azaria confirmed it isn’t one of his characters so Apu, Moe, CBG, Wiggum, Duffman and Carl are all safe.
i’m leaning towards grandpa or krusty
Pretty Sure it’s Sideshow Bob.
Clearly this seems to be Jackie Mason’s character, Rabbi Krustofsky. Krusty will be a “clown in the dumps” over the passing of his dear departed Dad.
I am guessing it to. But Rabbi Krustofsky is not iconic.
is either rabbi krustofy or Sideshow Bob
Iconic enough that JACKIE MASON won a EMMY for it…..and RABBI K has been on ALOT….
Graduating from such a program will give you great career and limitless opportunities.
You will probably be given your examination times, and might have to attend college of those in some cases, but yours is going to be no easier
or maybe more difficult than any campus student: they will likely be
the same, and you will assessed in your merits
just the same as any other university student. Awoyinfa includes references after each

Grandpa Simpson
I think it’s Sideshow bob. His last appearance was with a terrible storyline. They can’t squeeze much more out of the character.
Kelsey Grammar already confirmed that he’s not dying.
No, he didn’t. When he was asked, Grammer (the correct spelling) said, “Not to my knowledge”. That means he doesn’t know (or didn’t, at the time that he was asked) one way or the other.
It’s clear to me that Sideshow Bob is the character who will die.
Oh no, not a misspelled name! It’s clear to us that you need to lighten up.
Grammer nazi, you.
“What we told the performer is, ‘This does not mean the end of your participation in The Simpsons,’”
That would imply it’s not someone who does multiple voices on the show.
Exactly! That leaves us with only three options:
Rabbi Hyman Krustofski (voiced by Jackie Mason)
Sideshow Bob (voiced by Kelsey Grammer)
Princess Penelope (voiced by Anne Hathaway)
Oddly enough all of them are related, one way or another, to Krusty the Clown.
However Princess Penelope is a one-time character, so they wouldn’t make a deal out of it.
That leaves us Rabbi Krustofski and Sideshow Bob. Al Jean said he wouldn’t call this character “iconic” and Bob is undoubtedly iconic, so that leaves us with the Rabbi!
what about Homer’s half brother Herb or Artie Ziff? both are emmy winning actors Ziff is currently in jail so that seems plauseable he gets offed in prison and we haven’t seen Herb since season 3 i think?
If what the article and the above comments say is correct, the only possible character is…
[POTENTIAL SPOILER ALERT]
Rabbi Hyman Krustofski
But that would me be like Nelson and say “ah ah”, because you can think the character is great, but it apperead only in a few episodes. So, no need to make a big deal of it. Especially thinking about a really great character departed already in last months. RIP Marcia Wallace.
Who would I kill? Hey TVLine, let’s make a poll about it including only the most recurring characters. I’m curious to see the result. Going back to the question, I don’t know, I think noone since I love all of them.
They need to kill off Abe Simpson so he can become “The Lovematic Grandpa!”
It’s gotta be Barney. He fits the clues and his character is from another era. I still like him, he just seems the likeliest to go.
I’ll hazard a guess: Mayor Quimby.
You guys are all dumb. Obviously it’s either duff man or disco stu. My vote is disco stu just because he lost his disco a long time ago.
Hank Azaria’s already said it’s not one of his characters, dude, keep guessing. xD
please let it be barney please let it be barney i love both sideshow and grandpa.
grandpa simpson is ok to get axed he doesnt do much never has but give crazy war stories that have made you laugh very hard over the years so he spot could be replaceable,
but from all the sideshow bob episodes he is just as big as bart and homer and would hurt alot of fans if he is axed , alot of people including myself wont be returning if that happens so choose wisely or it may be show killer
in reply to my own comment……think about it sideshow bob is very popular character he may be too HUGE to kill off without pissing off fans that love him including myself,
a angry petition may start if he is the unlucky one, how can you not love the dumb nutcase that chuckles after getting hit in the face with a rake
Party and Selma Eddie lugash Agnes
Doesn’t even matter since they are also saying it may not be permanent now. C’mon, your cast is big enough. Kill off some dead-weight!
I think it will be marge
dudes its gotta be mr burns you know cause hes so old
The 2 clues are 1) won an Emmy. 2) the actor does only 1 voice. The only 2 that fit the criteria is krusty’s dad or sideshow bob.
AHHHHH! Sideshow Bob!
the only character Krusty’s dad will die (killing off is Hyman Krustofski (only) and Krusty the Clown plans to retire.!!
possibly no kids so that means[Bart,Lisa,Milhouse,Martin,Nelson,Jimbo,Kearney,Dolph,Sherri,Terri,Ralph,Janey,Todd,Rod,Uter,Database,Squeeky Teen,Maggie, and many others
All clues suggest Rabbi Hyman Krustofski. Jackie Mason has only voiced that character, he won an Emmy in 1992 for voicing Krustofski, and Jean tweeted that the title of the season premier is ” Clown in the Dumps,” where Krusty is expected to plan his retirement. Obviously if his father dies, that is a reason for him to be “in the dumps” and consider retiring. However, I have trouble seeing how the Rabbi is either great or iconic, and how killing a character that has been in 7 out of 550 episodes “s going to be a bigger deal than King Joffrey on Game of Thrones.” I honestly hope it is a bigger character, because I think killing Krustofski would not live up to the hype at all. Especially after Family Guy killed Brian out of the blue (though they did bring him back a few episodes later).
The episode will be called “Clown In The Dumps” and I think its going to be one of Dan’s character. Since its a Krusty-related episode and the clown is too iconic to die, its going to be his assistant Sideshow Mel OR his Rabbi father!
I say Sideshow Bob.
Jean didn’t say the character wasn’t iconic He said “… I never used the word ‘iconic.’”
Basically, a typical “I’m not saying it’s _____ but it’s totally _____” answer.
““We always have kind of a flexible reality,” Jean admitted, suggesting we could see the departed in a Halloween episode or in a dream sequence.”
Who better to bring up in Halloween episodes or terrible dreams than the man who’s been trying to murder the Simpson family for years now?
And that phrase. “The Yellow Wedding”. A Game of Thrones reference is one thing, but the Red Wedding was a massacre. Guessing there will be quite a bit of death. Well, which Simpsons character is generally associated with killing?
I dunno, that’s my guess.
I didn’t realize we’d already found the episode title. This…uh…okay, I don’t know who it is.
They arnt referencing the Red Wedding, they’re referencing the Purple Wedding… Only one death there, not that I had anything to do with that…
I hope that they’ll kill Krusty. He’s overused.
