Michael Lohan says he is “heartbroken” for his daughter Lindsay Lohan following her alleged violent altercation with fiancé Egor Tarabasov.

Lohan, 56, tells PEOPLE he was on the phone with his daughter during her fight with Tarabasov, where a distressed Lohan confided in him about the alleged abuse that was taking place.

“I’m heartbroken for her. She was on the phone with me when she was going through it,” he says. “She was frantic, she was in a bad position and I wanted to get her to a safe place and get her help.”

He says that while he was certainly concerned for her safety, Lohan finds peace in knowing she is surrounded by people who love her.

“The hardest part, the most frustrating part is not being able to be there,” he continues. “Thank god she has a great support system and she was able to get out of there.”

On Sunday, a video surfaced of a woman – who identifies herself as Lindsay – fighting with a man on a balcony and accusing him of choking and strangling her. PEOPLE was unable to verify the authenticity of the video.

A rep for Tarabasov did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment. Lindsay’s rep declined to comment.

Lohan has met Tarabasov on numerous occasions when the Russian businessman would travel to NYC with Lindsay.

“He was a gentlemen, I thought he was good for her. He didn’t drink or show any signs of instability,” he says. “I don’t know where it turned but maybe he put on his best face for me when he met me.”

As for their relationship status, Lohan says he believes Lindsay has not called off her engagement to Tarabasov – because she’s pregnant.

“She texted me and said [she was pregnant]. I’m going to believe what she says,” he explains. “I don’t think she’d be that quick to call it off, especially if she was pregnant.”

Meanwhile, a close friend of Lohan tells PEOPLE that the actress is not pregnant.

And while Lohan says Lindsay is still shaken from the traumatic situation, Lohan is proud of how his daughter is handling herself.

“I just texted her today and said ‘How are you sweetheart’ and she said ‘I’m okay Dad.’ She needs time for herself right now,” he says. “I spoke to her a number of times and not once over all those days I’ve spoken to her did she ever sound like she was drinking and incoherent in any way. I’m really proud she didn’t take that course.”

Lindsay was spotted lounging on a yacht with two friends in Sardinia, Italy, on Tuesday. A source tells PEOPLE the actress hopes to let things “cool off” with her fiancé while she’s away.

“She is still upset about what transpired between her and Egor,” says the source. “She is taking a few days off to spend time with friends and let things cool off between the two of them.”

And according to the source, a reconciliation between the two is not out of the question.

“Ultimately, she hopes with time they can move on and move forward again. She recognizes the good place they were in for much of the last year and just wants to get back there again. They are still engaged and only time will tell what happens next.”
