A follow-up to last year’s Butterfly from HTC was always on the cards and seeing as a press invite pretty much ruined the surprise for everyone, it was a dead-cert to be revealed today. Unsurprisingly, the addition of one more letter to the Butterfly hasn’t resulted in a complete overhaul and it doesn’t amount to what you’d call a true successor. What the Butterfly S is however, is an updated Butterfly with some of the headlining features from the HTC One grafted onto a similar design from last year.
Along for the ride this time around are features such as BoomSound, BlinkFeed and of course, the “UltraPixel” camera that we saw debut with the One. Let’s take a look at the full specs:
- 5-inch 1920 x 1080 LCD Display
- 1.9 Ghz Quad-Core Snapdragon 600 CPU
- 2GB of RAM
- 16GB Internal Storage with MicroSD Support
- UltraPixel rear-facing camera, with 2.1-megapixel wide-angle front-facing camera
- Built-in amplifier, with a duo of speakers on the front of the device to make up the BoomSound experience
- Android 4.1.2 with Sense 5
- 3,200 mAh
The Butterfly might not be much of a device here in the West, after all it only made it to Verizon as the Droid DNA, but in the East it’s become a quality brand for HTC. It’s also helping them reach higher than before, in terms of sales, in parts of Asia such as Japan, China, and Taiwan. HTC have realized that there are different needs for different parts of the globe and we should be pleased to see that they’re not pushing a Western phone on an Eastern audience.
If anything, the Butterfly S seems to be a little bit of a stop-gap, a way to appease those in the East that want their own smartphone with features like BoomSound and the UltraPixel camera. There’s nothing to suggest that this device is headed to Verizon as a sort of “Droid DNA+” or anything like that, but we certainly wouldn’t put it past Big Red. For those lucky enough to be in the Eastern part of the Globe, with access to such a device, you should expect to see the device sell for around NT$ 22,900 and hit shelves some time in July. Let us know what you think in the comments, should this come to Verizon as a Droid DNA+?
