BIMCO Tuesday announced that at its next annual conference in Hamburg on November 18, 2015 it will host a session titled "From Crisis to Clean-Up" focusing on managing a bunker spill clean-up operation.

Using a scenario of a bulk carrier, the Idle Star, running aground while transiting a U.S. river, BIMCO says the session will explore how salvage experts and clean-up specialists would deal with the vessel's ruptured bunker tank and a fuel oil spill in a fast flowing river.

The session, which BIMCO says will feature the latest technology and involve leading experts in the field, will also cover how owners and charterers should work together to manage the press as public criticism mounts over the pollution.

"Participants will see the drama unfold, vote on the action they would take and can ask questions of the expert speakers," stated BIMCO.

Commenting on the planned event, Angus Frew, Secretary General of BIMCO, said "the goal is for the sessions to be extremely useful for those working directly with these challenges – but also very engaging for all shipping professionals."

The conference will also include a session on vessel cyber security, and will host speakers such as Philippe Louis-Dreyfus, BIMCO President, Alfred Hartmann, President of the German Shipowners' Association (VDR), as well as Peter Sand, BIMCO's shipping economist.

Last year BIMCO joined forces with the Directorate-General of Sea Transportation of Indonesia, the Malaysia Marine Department of Malaysia, and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to release a pamphlet entitled Safe Passage: The Straits of Singapore and Malacca that included information on collision prevention measures.
