The Museum reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to withhold and/or withdraw permission to photograph on its premises or to reproduce photographs of objects in its collections. Visitors to The Met may be photographed, videotaped, or otherwise recorded.

A sample object credit line format is as follows: "The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York," followed by the specific information identified as the "Credit Line" on the Collection page for each work of art. The citation could also include the URL www.metmuseum.org.

However, museums often overstate their copyright protections. Although museums assert broad protections over all images shown on their website, courts have held that museums can only protect photographs of three-dimensional objects in the public domain, not two-dimensional objects.

Flash photography and video cameras cannot be used inside the Museum. Only pencils may be used in the galleries; the use of pens and markers is prohibited.
