If you accidentally signed up for the wrong account type, or you want to work as both a freelancer and a client — don't worry! On Upwork, you can have both account types under the same username. Once you add both account types, you can switch between them using the account menu in the top right corner.

Freelancers charge hourly, by the project, or on a retainer for set deliverables. A client may need only a single project, like a website or a certain number of social media posts, but if the client enjoys working with a freelancer, they may decide to offer more work.

Go to Settings › My Info. Click the Create New Account link at the bottom. Select New Freelancer Account. Once set up, use the account menu at the top-right of your screen to switch between using Upwork as a client, freelancer, or agency.

The Freelancer.com platform can require its users to pay a service fee up front before beginning fixed-price projects. (On Upwork, in contrast, service fees are automatically deducted from freelancer earnings after the job is complete.)
