Just prior to winter break, $91,470 worth of “Tools for Schools” grants were awarded to classrooms in the Cache County School District by the Cache Education Foundation.
Teachers can apply for these “mini-grants” in the fall and are awarded the funds before the winter break.
The grants must be used for classroom materials that are non-consumable, will last for several years and will benefit students directly, said Teri Lewis, the executive director of the Cache Education Foundation. Awarded grants were up to $200.
The Tools for Schools committee within the Cache Education Foundation reviews the grant requests each year. Any requests that do not fit the guidelines are turned down.
“The teachers have been doing this for quite some time now. They know what to ask for,” Lewis said. “I think out of the 500 requests, we only denied two because they were asking for consumable.”
The foundation funds these grants through an annual golf tournament that takes place in August. This past year, the foundation also celebrated its 25th anniversary with a special event at the Riverwoods Conference Center, followed by a concert featuring the National Tribute Band.
“And of course, we’ve received regular donations from businesses and conscientious community members or parents, people who understand that 100 percent of our donations go right back into the classroom,” Lewis said.
