Product Description
Green Street Hooligans (DVD) (WS) This is a story of loyalty, trust, and the sometimes brutal consequences of living close to the edge. Expelled unfairly from Harvard, American Matt Buckner (Elijah Wood "Everything is Illuminated," the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy) flees to England to his sister's home. Once there, he is befriended by her charming and dangerous brother-in-law, Pete Dunham, and introduced to the underworld of British football hooliganism. Matt learns to stand his ground through a friendship that develops against the backdrop of this secret and often violent world. Also starring Claire Forlani ("Meet Joe Black," "Basquiat") and Charlie Hunnam ("Cold Mountain," "Nicholas Nickleby"). Directed by Academy Award-nominated director Lexi Alexander.

After the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Elijah Wood could've opted for further big budget epics, but took a sharp left turn with this better-than-average B-movie. Released just after Everything is Illuminated, another offbeat entry, Wood plays journalism student Matt Buckner. In the prologue, he's expelled from Harvard when his over-privileged roommate sets him up to take the fall for his own misdeeds. With nowhere to go, Matt decides to visit his sister, Shannon (Claire Forlani), in London. He's already got a chip on his shoulder when he falls under the sway of Shannon's brother-in-law, Pete (Charlie Hunnam), head of West Ham's football "firm," the Green Street Elite. Matt soon gets caught up in their thuggish anticsto tragic effect. In her feature debut, German-born Lexi Alexander makes a mostly convincing case for the attractions of violence to the emotionally vulnerable, as opposed to the emotionally numb pugilists of the more satirical Fight Club. Unlike David Fincher (by way of Chuck Palahniuk), she plays it straight, except for the stylized fight sequences. Consequently, humor is in short supply, but the young Brit cast, especially Leo Gregory as the surly Bovver, is charismatic and Wood makes his character as believable as possible, i.e. he may seem miscast, but that's the point. Although there's no (direct) correlation between the two, Green Street makes a fine taster for Bill Buford's Among the Thugs, the ultimate dissection of the hooligan mentality. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Each charactors were really charming even the woman(Claire Forlani)-his sister who is a really small part was lovable and fun to look at. She knows how to choose actors all right.
Elijah Wood, Marc Warren (Brother in law) Charlie Hunnam (brother in law's brother) are all so lovely.
The story is kind of simple. Elijah Wood is kind of quiet wimp Harvard ex- student expelled by possesing heroine in fact was his rooomates who is a powerful man's son. He trapped him and made him screwed. Elijah has no guts to stand up and say it was his roommate's not his.
Then he goes to England where his sister lives for the first time. He haven't seen her since her marrage.
But her husband's not so cheerful hello and all, he moved out with his brother instead. He brought him to this soccer gangs which is crazy about soccor and hang around fighting with other mobs, and so on.
On the way back to the soccor game they had this violent fight with other group. There Elijah tastes some kind of bloody violent freedom for the first time although he was beaten.
He slowly felt that he is changed.
They shoult their lines in public, they hang out, they fight they have good times too. They are at least alive.
It was a whole new world for him.
By the time the husbad in law is almost being killed and the brother of the husband in law is stabbend to death, he then comes back to Harvard and face the truth.
He now can manage to see that roommate and fix the situation. He is not afraid anymore. His eyes are all shinning with anger, rage and there is no single fear anymore.
We finally get to see Elijah Wood in a role that suits him. He's absolutely brilliant and far underrated. He may be soft-spoken and have big eyes, but Elijah is a lot smarter than what people give him credit for. Unlike his peers who stick to the "teenager/high school" genre, he has no problems tackling emotional dramas or independent roles. In the future, this'll be old hat to him while everyone else tries to catch up.
Someone mentioned he didn't have the "edge" or the "look" of a member of a London street gang, but I disagree. He played Matt Buckner spot on. I mean, the guy got kicked out of Harvard for something he didn't do, and he didn't fight back because he's never been in a fight. Then he meets Pete Dunham who brings him into a world where prestigious titles and station don't make a lick of difference. Or as Pete would say, "That means f--- all!"
Next to LOTR, this is Elijah Wood's best role. Definitely worth adding to your DVD collection.
