Machel Sulton, from the village of Mahaut, was one of 12 students who were awarded graduate certificates in Endangered Species Management from Durrell Wildlife Academy in Jersey, United Kingdom.
Durrell Wildlife Academy is the world leader in conservation capacity development, operating at the interface between in-situ and ex-situ conservation and has 3,350 graduates in 135 countries around the world.
(In Situ conservation is on-site conservation or the conservation of genetic resources in natural populations of plant or animal species. Ex Situ conservation is the conservation and maintenance of samples of living organisms outside their natural habitat.)
Durrell has become the academy of choice for many seeking careers in conservation and leading conservation projects.
Sulton is a former student of the Isaiah Thomas Secondary School who later went on to do an Associate Degree in Agricultural Science at the Dominica State College.
During his tenure at Durrell, he was active in representing Dominica when Princess Anne visited the academy.
Sulton, who plays an important role in the Dominica Mountain Chicken Project, also did a series of presentations on that project to the Commonwealth Society of Jersey and ZSL London Zoo.
He also obtained a Leadership certificate with the Chartered Management Institute CMI, a certificate in Facilitation and Communication with IUCN/SSC CBSG and GIS certification with ERT Conservation.
Sulton will continue his studies in conservation as he was selected among 20 persons in the Caribbean for the inaugural 2015/2016 class of the Conservation Leadership in the Caribbean (CLiC) program. This initiative is funded by the US Fish and Wildlife Service – Without Borders program and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).
He is the son of Janie Serrant and Maurice Sulton.

You have studied hard to achieve this recognition and to obtain your certificate. It could not be done without your intelligence and dedication.
You have made your parents, Mahaut residents and other Dominicans in general extremely proud of you.
You are a model for the D/can youths to emulate. You have projected that good work ethics, taking your position and studies seriously triumphs in the end.
Keep up the studies and research. It is my feeling, it will not be long when you will obtain a PhD. Good luck in your further endeavors.

I am extremely delighted to hear about Machel’s successes. Machel represents a new generation of conservation leaders in the Dominica. In his short years at the Division he has demonstrated that he has what it takes to succeed in this field of work. It is not a high paying job but the satisfaction of knowing that you have contributed to Dominica’s conservation program can be truly rewarding. He is truly an excellent find for the Forestry Division and I wish him every success. The sky’s the limit. Go for it my friend. You are the future of the Forestry Division.

Well done Machel but whoever put that caption there saying it is you with princess Ann is a joker. Perhaps that lady changed her name to that but it certainly is not Princess Ann the Queen’s daughter! Editor check that please because I would not want Machel to look like a fool.
PS. Machel, perhaps you could help to get us to release those poor Jaco parrots in that miserable cage in the botanic gardens. These birds should not be there but enjoy their freedom in nature like ourselves. That is a stain on us. Set them free!

Thanks Sulton for clearing that up. I know that Pricess Anne was in Jersey on 4 March and that she is the patron of the Durrell Conservation Trust. I guess you had the opportunity to meet her on that occasion. I appreciate the work they do and hope that in future we can benefit from your achievements, turn the botanic garden back into what it was designed to be and please….release these poor parrots from their imprisonment in that awful cage. Learn to read!!. The article clearly says “During his tenure at Durrell, he was active in representing Dominica when Princess Anne visited the academy.” If you did not know what “during his tenure” meant you should have just Googled it.
With respect:
– the original caption under the picture read that Sulton posed with princess Ann (the editor subsequently corrected that).
– with regard to tenure, this would imply that Sulton was teaching at the institute.
Maybe I’m wrong, but from the article I deduce that he was a student and not a tutor.
