Tiacan is a semi-crescent shape shawl designed in a bold geometric pattern. The design is reminiscent of American Indian art and I felt compelled to honor the local Native Americans who inspired the design which I created on our annual vacation to Crescent Lake in Oregon. The lake is fed by the same mountain streams as one of the main forks of the Willamette River which flows into the Willamette Valley.

Tiacan was one of the remaining leaders of the Kalapuya tribe of the Willamette Valley after 90% of their population was destroyed by small pox and malaria. He stood his ground during treaty negotiations stating, “…we will not leave the land where our hearts are…”

Tiacan is charted, and worked from the neck down with a crochet bind-off. Directions for optional beading are included.

NOTE: ktbl is missing from the chart key and glossary. Also, beaded stitches are in orange, not in blue. Both are being updated in the pattern.
