Journey from the deepest trenches in the oceans to the farthest humans have ventured into space and learn what it takes to explore the extremes. You might just be surprised by how similar the domains of ASTRONAUTS and AQUANAUTS really are.

Space and the ocean. If you don't think they go together, think again! Both deep-sea and space explorers have to worry about pressure, temperature, climate, and most importantly, how to survive in a remote and hostile environment. Join us on an amazing journey as we go up in space with astronauts and dive deep down in the ocean with aquanauts to explore the far-off places of our planet and the solar system.

With a strong tie into STEM topics--such as making connections, making comparisons, and recognizing patterns across content areas--readers will discover the amazing science and incredible innovations that allow humans (and sometimes only machines) to survive in these harsh environments.

Editorial Reviews

Review

" Splashy page layouts with plenty of full-color photos and quotes from scientists who work in each field accompany the clearly written text, which includes pointers for readers interested in careers in ocean or space exploration (or both!). With an eye toward future advancements and cooperation between NASA and NOAA, this is an inspiring, informative look at two exciting frontiers of exploration." -- Booklist

I bought this book because I was attending a workshop where the author, Jennifer Swanson, was teaching. This book is wonderfully comprehensive in comparing and contrasting sea and space environments. Covering how and why we explore as well as what we've learned, readers will be able to imagine themselves as astronauts or aquanauts. There are activities for young readers to cement understanding, a glossary and a section where readers can 'meet' the scientists. Not just for science lovers, this book will inform and inspire many readers. Me? I'd want to be an aquanaut.

This was a surprise find for me when I was looking at marine-life books for my grandson. This is a very interesting book that all of my grandkids ages 13-9 enjoy. It explores the relationship between space and ocean science. Highly recommend.

If you're like me and remember seeing the first moon landing, and were an avid fan of the Jacques Cousteau TV series, you will find this book fascinating. It's fun to read what goes into the preparation for both space and ocean exploration, and how both of them have evolved since those early days. And it is packed with information and lots of illustrations to keep children interested all the way to the last page.

This must be a wonderful book because I’ve barely been able to read any of it. My students won’t give it back to me and it has been checked out pretty much continuously since I shared it.
