Sony Computer Entertainment announced today it sold 5.7 million PlayStation 4 units during the 2015 holiday season. Lifetime sales for the console are now at 35.9 million units.

Software sales also remained high during the holiday season with more than 35 million games sold at retail and the PlayStation Store.

The number of users who subscribed to PlayStation Plus at the end of 2015 is 60 percent higher when compared to the same period in 2014.

"We are absolutely delighted that so many customers have selected PS4 as the best place to play throughout this holiday season and that the PS4 community is growing more than ever," said Sony Computer Entertainment president and global CEO, Andrew House. "We remain steadfast in our commitment to deliver innovative entertainment experiences, and look forward to bringing an unprecedented games portfolio from third party developers and publishers and SCE Worldwide Studios, including Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, New Hot Shots Golf (working title) and The Last Guardian, this coming year."

The PlayStation 4 is currently available in 124 countries.

Out of current gen, yeah, best console.
Best resolution/framerate/power, most games and most exclusives.
Best exclusives? Well that's subjective, but unarguably greatest variety of exclusives, as well as way more new ip's.

Shows this is a purely biased Playstation website, with no room for discussion to the contrary or any kind of thoughtful discussion.

He said it was the "best console" not me, why is it the best? That's the question. I didn't bash PS4 anywhere in my post, give an example. Best at what?

And he gave a reason. You're just flaming by saying 'LOL' at someones opinion. Disagree with it if you want just be a bit more mature than that and stop effing double posting

So the reasons PS4 is good for the gaming industry is because Sony triple charges you for BC features that should be included with PSPlus? Do you honestly think that's good for the industry? You think that's a good direction?

Couldn't be any worse of a direction than taking a dump all over your userbase, insult them by saying you listened to them and not your investors, and never offer a formal apology for such actions. Instead, Sony has always made the PS4 about playing PS4 games. Nothing more, nothing less. Everything else is just extra, and they recognize that.

That's the most pathetic response I've ever heard. So incredible limp. Are you a Playstation spokesperson?

It depends. Are you an Xbox spokesperson?

Who said anything about Xbox?

Azuren KazumaKiryu (on 06 January 2016)

Well, only a few Nintendo fans argue that their console is the best, and the fact that you seem to be challenging PS4 being the best console would imply you don't identify as a PC Gamer. Odds are you're an MS fan bitter about OP's belief of PS4's superiority over XB1, though there is a small chance you're a Nintendo fan with the same problem.

But just remember. If the Xbox One were also sold in 124 countries, it would have sold as many PS4s. :P

Street fighter should move a few good units too. Uncharted will do great. Hopefully GT:Sport releases in good time and you got three big system sellers from the exclusive library alone. Horizon still has to sell itself as a system seller but we got E3 for that!

Only 3 million until Sony hit their 17.5 million FY sales target.

Stoneysilence ThatDanishGamer (on 06 January 2016)

Sony's FY ends at the end of March. May be tough to sell 3m during Jan, Feb, Mar which traditionally are the lowest months of sales of the year.

Wow. I'm most impressed with the accuracy of the VGChartz numbers as it pertains to the PS4. XBO still overtracked by about 18 million IMO.

It is announced this now because the CES conference in the US, which is happening this week. There is also a Sony presentation in a few hours, where they'll probably reveal pricing for PlayStation VR. So it maker perfect sense to announce the numbers as they are, with the .9 :)
