Summer Memories: Drama Students performed “Streetcar” at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival

From August 1st - 13th, 11 members of the PHS Advanced Acting class traveled to Edinburgh, Scotland to perform at Fringe, a performing arts festival bringing together more than a thousand carefully selected performances from around the globe. The students performed four times at the Pilrig Church Social Hall and received a four star (highly recommended) review from Broadway Baby. Bravo!

Hamlet Fringe Festival Cast Members

Front Row: L-R: Amy Kelleher, Cecelia Soghikian, Sophie Nadler

Back Row L-R: Walter Le Duy, Zane Haney, Wes Dunlap, Mara Blumenstein, Grant Gadbois, PHS Acting teacher Kim Taylor, Becca Havian, Gabe Bolio, Maya Tellez

Jean Jarvis and Eric Havian, parents of cast member Becca Havian, thought this was a fantastic opportunity: “We observed that the students’ personal and artistic growth from their high school performance to the final Fringe performance was dramatic. This was a unique educational opportunity, and we appreciate the support that the district administration, parents of cast members, Support Groups (PHS Parent Club, CHIME, ALPS), greater Piedmont community, and especially, Kim Taylor, were able to provide.”

Welcome Letter from Principal Daniels
August 4, 2014

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians:

I am very excited to welcome all students and families to Piedmont High School for the 2014 - 15  school year. “Achieve the Honorable,” our school’s long-standing tradition, occurs through students’ and staff’s personalized pursuits of academic learning, school/community involvement, and personal growth. PHS offers an exceptional educational program of strong academic rigor that is balanced with outstanding student support and a wide range of co-curricular and  extracurricular opportunities.

Some highlights for this school year include the following initiatives: a new bell schedule pilot; 1:1 Chromebook program pilot for all ninth and eleventh graders; continued work on Common Core State Standards (CCSS), Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), CSTA K–12 Computer Science Standards, and  Service Learning implementation; and a new freshman student  transition program called Ground Crew.

PHS offers a talented faculty who work each day to foster high academic learning and promote social and emotional growth for all students. This school year’s new PHS faculty members are Ginna Myers, assistant principal of curriculum and instruction; Amy Dunn-Ruiz, math teacher; Tamatha Hauskens, English teacher;  Dr. Rajendra Shrivastava, computer science teacher; Katie Terhar, social science teacher; Craig Best, athletic director; and Sara Taylor, paraeducator.

PHS values student and family involvement in our programs. To learn more about our programs, visit and explore the PHS website and the Parents’ Club website. PHS  community members are committed to ensure that each student receives the best educational experience possible for success in the twenty-first century.

Please note that for the first week of instruction, PHS  will be on the special schedule shown here for Wednesday,  August 20, through Friday, August 22. The following  week, PHS will  follow  our new regular five - day  rotation bell schedule.

Best  regards,

Brent Daniels

New Science Course

We recently announced that we have a new science course called Physics: Alternative Energy Design & Construction.  This course has been approved by UC Doorways, and meets the “D” lab science requirement, as a physical science.  This course was developed by Ms. Chamberlain, one of our National Board Certified Teachers, and was submitted in June for A-G approval.  This approval was granted two weeks ago.

We are catching up on getting this course updated on Infinite Campus, as such, you might see the old course name listed still. Bear with us as we work on getting IC updated with the new course title and code.

If you have questions about this please contact Assistant Principal Ginna Myers.

Course Change Requests

Our counseling office has been receiving a significantly high number of course change requests, so please bear with us.  For the first week of school, we are going to prioritize addressing requests from:

1. Students with no class scheduled periods 2, 3,

4, 5 or 6

2. Freshmen, sophomores and juniors with fewer than 6 classes or  seniors with fewer than 5 classes

3.  Students that have completed summer school and need their schedule adjusted

4.  Students missing required courses

5.  Students with two courses scheduled during the same period

6.  Students without a schedule

The counseling office will see students for other concerns beginning the week of August 25th.

Lockers

Please look for updated information about student locker assignments soon.
