Two Tropical Storms Alter Cruise Itineraries for Carnival and Norwegian

Tropical Storm Hermine and Tropical Storm Lester have forced at least two cruise lines to make adjustments to their cruise schedules.

Norwegian Cruise Line has moved up the departure of Norwegian Breakaway due to Tropical Storm Hermine.  The ship will now leave New York at 1:30 pm today and expedited embarkation began at 9:30 am, a few hours ahead of schedule.

Norwegian also made a change to Pride of America due to Hurricane/Tropical Storm Lester near Hawaii.  The ship departed three hours earlier than normal from Honolulu, Hawaii to avoid the storm’s path. The storm is now moving away from Hawaii and should not affect the itinerary of the cruise.

Carnival Cruise Line has made one change to the itinerary on Carnival Sunshine die to Tropical Storm Hermine.  The ship departed New York on Saturday and will now visit Portland, Maine first and then Boston, Massachusetts before sailing to Canada. Sunshine is spending today at sea as originally scheduled.

It is rare that a cruise line will cancel a cruise due to a tropical storm or hurricane.  To stay out of a storm’s path, cruise lines will alter itineraries as needed to keep passengers and crew members safe from storms.  Read: What Happens if There is a Hurricane During My Cruise

  1. Carnival Pride arriving today skipped a stop in Freeport to “beat the storm” back to Baltimore, and wound up sailing right through it resulting in water entering the ship in multiple locations, passengers tossed about the ship with life preservers on in sheer terror, and 2 passengers having heart attacks.
