HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Huntsville City Schools has released an architect's rendering of the proposed Whitesburg P-8 school.

Designed by Chapman Sisson Architects, the new building will combine the current Whitesburg elementary and middle schools under one roof. It is scheduled to open in time for the start of the 2015-16 academic year.

The city subdivision committee signed off on the location, design and layout of the school at a meeting last week. It will be built next door to the current Whitesburg elementary and middle schools at the corner of Whitesburg Drive and Martin Road.

A new Whitesburg campus is part of the city school system's $194 million capital plan designed to deliver more equitable facilities and academic programs to students across Huntsville. The plan also includes construction of new Grissom and Johnson high schools, a freshman academy at Huntsville High, a new junior high on the current Johnson High campus to replace Davis Hills and Ed White middle schools, and new University Place and Martin Luther King Jr. elementary schools.

"I think the new Whitesburg P-8 is one of the most exciting schools we're building because it will be so visible from Whitesburg Drive," said school board member Topper Birney. "It will be a really big shot in the arm for that area."
