Football News: Kris Commons' Crossroads

Kris Commons' Crossroads

Kris Commons is at a crossroads, decisions made in the coming months will determine when, where and how the curtain will come down on his career. In just over three weeks time he will be free to talk to other club's with ex-manager Neil Lennon's Bolton looking like the early favourites to try and prise Commons away from Celtic Park in January never mind on a Bosman next summer.

At 31 Commons knows this could well be his last playing contract at any decent level and he is looking for the security of a two-year deal whereas Celtic are only offering a one year extension. I just don't see Commons having a place at Celtic next season never mind in 2-3 years times.
His playing style doesn't fit in with the tactics Ronny Deila wants his team to play, Commons has never been the fittest of players or best of trainers and I doubt he is going to change his approach at this stage of his career.

There's no doubt Commons is coming off the back off the best two seasons of his otherwise mediocre career, 19 goals and 32 goals respectively is a good return but when you see he only scored once in 33 matches in his first full season for Celtic it shows the inconsistent pattern that has shown up throughout his career.

Even before this season kicked off I made my worries known that I expected Commons to have an indifferent season, it just followed the pattern, and once I heard of Ronny Deila's plans I couldn't see where Commons would fit in with playing a high-pressing game requiring high levels of energy and fitness.

The one place I always felt Commons was found out was in Europe, he was mostly anonymous in most of Celtic's matches in the Champions League or Europa League, his lack of mobility on the park made it easy for opposition teams to nulify him.

Over recent weeks it's looking more and more likely that Ronny Deila prefers Stefan Johansen playing in the No.10 role than he does Commons and again his lack of energy/mobility will stop him starting out on the left where Anthony Stokes finds himself in Deila's 4-2-3-1 formation.
Kris Commons won't be happy sitting on the bench and with his contract negotiations at a stalemate he might fancy one more crack at England, that will certainly help boost his retirement fund, so maybe it is for the best that Celtic and Commons part ways, hopefully that'll be in January if for nothing else Celtic will get a fee for him.

During the summer Celtic moved on and sadly Kris Commons looks to have been left behind. These things happen in football, especially when a new manager comes in, it's down to football, it's nothing personal. Commons will never be spoke about in the same bracket as Paul McStay or Tom Boyd, along with his family he took the club into their hearts and he was an integral and important part of the Neil Lennon era that gave us some good times, those good times should ensure Kris Commons leaves Celtic with our best wishes and good luck messages ringing in his ears.
