SC-appointed panel submits roadmap, suggests ‘relaxing’ ban on diesel cabs in NCR

The Supreme Court-appointed Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) Thursday submitted a roadmap in the apex court in which, sources said, it suggested that the ban on approximately 30,000 diesel cabs in the capital be “relaxed”. The Authority suggested ‘relaxation’ of the ban in such a manner that neither the owners of diesel vehicles suffer financial losses nor is there any harm to the environment, said sources. However, they did not reveal the time-frame suggested by the EPCA for the phasing out of such cabs.

Bhure Lal, chairman of EPCA, said, “We have submitted our roadmap to the Supreme Court. The plan was prepared after we held prolonged consultations with all stakeholders till late Wednesday. We have ensured that all the suggestions and grievances were heard and addressed, and no particular stakeholder has to suffer because of the ban.”

“We spoke to over 200 drivers and cab owners as well as officials of the Delhi government, Haryana government, UP government, the state police forces and all other stakeholders We drafted our reports taking everyone’s views into consideration. No one will suffer,”he added.

The Delhi government said it would follow the roadmap presented by the EPCA if the apex court accepted it Monday, the day scheduled for the hearing on the matter. “We are submitting a statement to the Supreme Court Friday, saying we will implement the suggestions of the EPCA if they are accepted by the court. We are not submitting a separate report ,” said a spokesperson of the Delhi government.
