Two U.S. Navy fighter jets collided over the Pacific Ocean and crashed, leaving one pilot injured and the second missing.

The F/A-18 Hornets were patrolling off the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson about 5:40 p.m. Friday when they crashed in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region, the Navy said.

The American jets collided before crashing, according to NBC News, which reported the Carl Vinson was en route to the Persian Gulf to relieve the USS George H.W. Bush.

Planes off the Bush carrier were performing combat missions over Iraq, NBC reported.

A guided-missile cruiser, destroyer and helicopters are all part of the search for the second pilot, the Navy said.

The extent of the rescued pilot’s injuries are unclear. The two downed aircraft have also yet to be recovered.
