Come To The Historical City Of Verona In Italy!

The supposed balcony of Juliet
The city of Verona is a hugely popular spot in the region of Veneto. A more relaxed destination than the lagoon city of Venice, Verona offers tourists a vast and rich archive of superb architecture, art and cultural heritage to explore. It’s been awarded a UNESCO World Heritage Status for its well documented places of interest and frequently hosts thrilling opera performances, festivals and lively markets!

The famous English playwright and poet, William Shakespeare clearly had a great love for the city as three of his plays are based in Verona; ‘The two Gentlemen of Verona”, ‘The taming of the Shrew’ and probably his most famous ‘Romeo and Juliet’

Those wishing to stay close to Verona for a few days have a lovely choice of holiday rentals near Lake Garda which is within a couple of hours from the city. Here holiday makers can enjoy the best of the scenic Lake Garda and then travel into Verona for an exciting day of exploration!
Verona's ancient Arena
Art lovers will enjoy a few days of touring around the cathedrals, churches and museums of Verona which house magnificent works of art that date from medieval time, throughout the Renaissance and up to the modern day.

Begin a thrilling day of history and learning by visiting the large ancient Roman amphitheatre which was built in the 1st century AD and is the third largest in the world! The outer wall of it was destroyed in 1117 but it’s still open to the public for frequent opera and theatre performances throughout the year.

Verona was once a major military city and tourists can still see much of the ancient fortress walls that used to envelop it. Visit the remains of the Castle Scaligeri which once ruled over the area and protected it from attackers.

Enjoy a walk around some of the ornate religious buildings dotted across the city, namely Verona Cathedral. It has a stunning marble decorated facade with lots of biblical stories carved into the outer and inner walls. The Basilica of St. Zeni is most certainly worth a look as it is a rich haven of art and historical works. Its interior is coloured with vibrant frescoes and lined with intricately carved statues.
Scaligeri Castle and bridge
Also worth a walk around is the Castel Vecchio, a smaller 14th century red brick fortress built on the banks of the River Aldige. The city’s art museum is here also; open to visitors to browse around at their ease. Learn about the way of life in Verona through the many fascinating paintings that hang from these old walls.

Visit the Piazza delle Erbe which is Verona’s old historical centre. There’s a lovely fountain here to sit by and watch the world go by. A majestic 14th century clock tower stands here which is the tallest in the city. Visitors can climb the 238 steps to the top which offer superb views of Verona and the surrounding area.

If you wish to spend some time away from the hustle and bustle of Verona’s city centre a trip to the Giardino Giusti which are beautiful Renaissance/Mannerist style gardens would be an ideal getaway for an afternoon. It’s full of little grottos, secret passageways and unusual land carvings that are begging to be photographed and fondly remembered! These gardens are considered to be among some of the most important in Italy.

Be sure to add this warm and welcoming city to your next holiday travel itinerary!
