Westport Selectmen discuss vandalism, historical archives

Speaking before the Westport Board of Selectmen at its meeting Monday evening, Richard DeVries expressed his concern about recent vandalism at the town’s Wright Landing property.

By repeatedly driving in circles, an unknown individual destroyed a portion of the landing’s grassed area in what was apparently an intentional act of vandalism. The vandalism occurred after dark and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office took a report of the incident from DeVries.

It was suggested by the deputy responding to the call that the town should place a sensor light in the area so that any intruders would not be able to rely on darkness to mask their activities.

DeVries appeared before the meeting to initiate a discussion about the possible next steps in adding a sensor light as well as a sign to remind Landing visitors that the area is closed after dark. Placement of a sensor light will require installation of a pole and underground electrical wiring to the pole.

The board asked DeVries to obtain an estimate for the work and to return to a future meeting with the estimate. He was also asked to create a sign for the Landing which indicated that it was closed to the public after dark.

Gaye Wagner and Mary Coventry, who both serve on the town’s history committee, came before the board seeking approval to submit an application for a grant from Maine State Archives.

The grant would provide financial assistance to the town for the preservation of historical and archival documents, currently stored in the Town Hall and Town Office.

“Humidity is an issue,” Wagner explained, and current storage locations need to be measured for humidity. The consultant would then help the committee prioritize their next steps in preserving the stored documents.

The board approved their request to apply for a grant from Maine State Archives by the deadline of Oct. 1.

The town will hold its annual end-of-season potluck supper on Saturday, Sept. 27 at the Town Hall at 6 p.m. Those attending are asked to bring a dessert, salad or main dish with them. Entertainment will be provided by Dr. Burt Prater, ventriloquist.
