Activision Blizzard will bring back its Guitar Hero series after reinventing it, CEO Bobby Kotick told Forbes. If Activision is truly learning from its mistakes, it'll probably leave out virtual Kurt Cobain this time.

Activision is in the works on a reimagined Guitar Hero game developed by a new studio, its CEO said in a recent interview.

The virtual rock-star game franchise "became unsuccessful because it didn’t have any nourishment and care. So we made what I think was exactly the right decision last year" to kill off the brand and shut down the division, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said to Forbes this week.

"We said you know what, we need to regain our audience interest, and we really need to deliver inspired innovation," he said. "So we’re going to take the products out of the market, and we’re not going to tell anybody what we’re doing for awhile, but we’re going to stop selling Guitar Hero altogether. And then we’re going to go back to the studios and we’re going to use new studios and reinvent Guitar Hero. And so that’s what we’re doing with it now."

Later in the interview, Kotick said that an unnamed game development studio has already been assigned the task of creating "a variety of different prototypes" to revitalize the music game brand.
