2012 candidates stake out positions on sharia

Sharia law is quickly becoming a hot-button topic on the campaign trial, as conservatives debate the role of Islam in the United States and the conservative movement. The exact mechanics of how sharia, or Islamic jurisprudence, is threatening the United States are unclear, but some conservatives point to cases in New Jersey and Florida that they say underscores the need for a blanket ban on using foreign law in the United States.

The issue resonates with many GOP primary voters and legislators in the early primary state of South Carolina is considering a ban on sharia law that might force some more 2012 contenders engage on the issue. We've rounded up how the various 2012 candidates have positioned themselves on the issue so far.

Tim Pawlenty, facing questions about a sharia compliant mortgage program: "The United States should be governed by the U.S. Constitution, not religious laws."

A spokesman: "As soon as Gov. Pawlenty became aware of the issue, he personally ordered it shut it down. Fortunately, only about three people actually used the program before it was terminated at the Governor's direction."

Sarah Palin, on sharia: "Whether it be just affecting a segment of the population, a demographic, certainly not in its entirety all over our country, Americans will not stand for this because Americans are smart enough to know Sharia law, if that were to be adopted -- allowed to govern in our country, it will be the downfall of America. And too many Americans are onto this already and are starting to rise up and send that message to our federal officials and say, no, we will not put up with any hint of Sharia law being any sort of law of the land."

Newt Gingrich, on sharia: "We should have a federal law that says sharia law cannot be recognized by any court in the United States," Gingrich said to a standing ovation from the audience. The law will let judges know, Gingrich said, that "no judge will remain in office that tried to use sharia law."

Rick Santorum, on sharia: "We need to define it and say what it is. And it is evil. Sharia law is incompatible with American jurisprudence and our Constitution."

Herman Cain, on Muslims and sharia: "Asked whether there would be a place for a Muslim appointee in Cain's administration, Cain flatly said "No.""

"There is this creeping attempt to gradually ease Sharia law and the Muslim faith into our government. It does not belong in our government," he told a Think Progress blogger.

Gary Johnson, on sharia: He told a gathering of supporters in December that he had his "ear to the ground" on the sharia issue when asked by a voter.

  1. why is this even being talked about or debated?. We have our Constitution and Laws, and they over-rule anything and everything. They are the only, and final decision on everything. Case closed.

  8. You have to hand it to the GOP. They sure come up with lots of inventive ways to instill fear into their sheep. Reagan had the Russians. And it's been one big crazy fear fest since then... the Iranians...the gays, God's wrath on abortion, terrorists, Saddam Hussain, the Chinese, Mexicans stealing our jobs, a 'foriegner' for a president, money sucking teachers, cops, and firemen, unions....Geez....is there anything you guys aren't scared of?

All they care about is gotcha controversial issues to drum up outrage. Social issues are not the focus for 2012. Notice how they never drill Obama on his abortion stance.

  16. Producer, Obama cannot even get Democrats excited anymore. Only 37% of Democrats strongly approve of his job so far. And the overall number is only 19%. What that means is that turnout will be very low and the chances of getting historic turnout among minorities and young people is far less likely than in 08.

Even the military was begging this guy to think of the troops serving over there. But of course he knew he could hide behind his freedom of speech right as an american citizen, and screw any of the troops who may have to pay for his actions. If we didn't have troops in harms way in Afgahnastan I would say burn away, but this 'man of God' was warned about the consequences and put his egotistical desire to 'be heard' over other people's lives. You are just as arrogant to insist that this guy bears no responsiblity for what everyone knew would happen. He was hoping idiots like you would come crawling out of the woodwork to protect him. Shame on you.

  27. "4:27, Rassumussen is far more predictive than your Mother Jones polls"

Mother Jones doesn't do polling. They do investigative journalism. Since you have no idea what investigative journalism actually is, I understand there might be some confusion.

Also ANY polling outfit or anyone remotely familiar with polling will tell you that polls are a snapshot of public opinion at the time they are taken and are not predicative. But if we are discussing accuracy.....

Nate Silver (the country's best prognosticator) "On Tuesday, polls conducted by the firm Rasmussen Reports — which released more than 100 surveys in the final three weeks of the campaign, including some commissioned under a subsidiary on behalf of Fox News — badly missed the margin in many states, and also exhibited a considerable bias toward Republican candidates."

So tell us Dan, how does Rasmussen poll effectively if they do not call any cell phones?

  34. Well ladies, if you want to be mummified, and be subjected to forced cliterodectomies, forced marriage, forced concubinage, your academic degrees, driver's licences - any accomplishments you have earned including property ownership and inheritances nullified, this is just a small taste of what you're in for with Sharia law. This doesn't include anatomical dismembership, or having your skull crushed with stones, or beheadings on the mere whim of hypocritical "religious" men who have seraglios. This isn't 'law;' it's not 'religious law,' it's no form of justice, it's evil. It's heinous. In one word it's slavery. It is the systematic degredation and negation of women as human beings first and citizens second - from society and civil discourse. As an American woman of African descent, whose ancestors shed blood on this soil as slaves and as free men, and for this country on foreign soil, I'll be a d%mned if I become a slave for the memory of an extremely dead man in Mecca, or the "dead" men who follow him.

C'est tout.

  37. Peace folks: Islam commands freedom of religion. And Muslims practiced democracy over a 1,000 years before America was ever created. God commanded Muhammad to consult the people in all public matters. Islam and democracy have never been incompatible and sharia law says Muslim minorities must obey the laws of the non-Muslim nations they live in. These debates are based on entirely flawed logic and a lack of understanding about Islam. No one is trying to trump the Constitution. But Muslims should be respected. There is nothing wrong with a sharia-compliant mortgage as long as it is voluntary for Muslims because it is a violation of our religious freedom to force us to take out an interest-bearing loan. It's the same as a Christian or Jew being allowed to refuse work on a Sabbath day. The Constitution and federal law backs up those rights. Why can't Muslims have basic federal rights as long as they don't violate the Constitution? We're in the modern civil rights movement, folks. First it was Native Americans, then blacks, women, immigrants, the Asians, etc. The mechanics of the oppression are the same. There was a time when is was illegal for a black person to speak an African language or play a drum because overzealous whites thought they were taking over America. This is the exact same thing.
