That’s right, again.
The Amazing Spider-Man film series might not have broken any box-office records, but it did manage to only need two films (one less than Sam Raimi‘s Spider-Man series) before the studio decided a reboot was in order. The reboot is not completely due to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 bombing — receiving 2.5 out of 5 stars on from both Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic — but also as a result of a recent deal between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment.
After owning the film rights to the comic book hero since 1999, Sony has reached an agreement that will spring everyone’s favorite web-slinger back over to Marvel.
The new film which is set to hit the big screen on July 28, 2017, will not feature Andrew Garfield — who played Spider-Man/Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man series — in the lead role. Reports say the new film will more focally take place in a high school (Garfield is 31) leading to speculation that perhaps the new film could premiere the African-American version of Spider-Man a.k.a. Miles Morales in the titular role.
According to Variety, now that the Spider-Man franchise is on the Marvel side, execs may introduce the new incarnation of the wall-crawler in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War film next year, with the full-feature reboot to premiere the following year.
It has also been reported that Drew Goddard who has been eyed to put together The Sinister Six film — a spinoff about Spider-Man’s archenemies — to write and direct the reboot.
