A man who reportedly said he had a grenade demanded money from a teller at the Bank of Maine on Winthrop Street in Hallowell Monday morning.

The hold-up occurred around 10:15 a.m. The man said he had a grenade and demanded money, according to initial scanner traffic. Hallowell Police Chief Eric Nason wouldn’t confirm the report of the grenade.

He said the man asked to open an account then presented a note demanding money. Nason would not disclose the contents of the note, including details about any threats the man may have made.

Bank staff gave him an undisclosed amount of money, and he left on foot, reportedly walking down Winthrop Street.

The robber is a man in his late 60s or early 70s. He is about 6 feet tall and estimated to weigh 175 pounds. He was wearing a straw hat, a tan or brown coat, a blue shirt, tan or brown pants and brown shoes, and he was carrying a brown briefcase.

Maine State Police and Kennebec County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the robbery report.
