Nowhere But Here (Thunder Road Book 1) Kindle Edition
An unforgettable new series from acclaimed author Katie McGarry about taking risks, opening your heart, and ending up in a place you never imagined possible.
Seventeen-year-old Emily likes her life the way it is: doting parents, good friends, good school in a safe neighbourhood. Sure, she's curious about her biological father — the one who chose life in a motorcycle club, the Reign of Terror, over being a parent — but that doesn't mean she wants to be a part of his world. But when a reluctant visit turns to an extended summer vacation among relatives she never knew she had, one thing becomes clear: nothing is what it seems. Not the club, not her secret-keeping father, and not Oz, a guy with suck-me-in blue eyes who can help her understand them both.
Oz wants one thing: to join the Reign of Terror. They're the good guys. They protect people. They're...family. And while Emily — the gorgeous and sheltered daughter of the club's most respected member — is in town, he's gonna prove it to her. So when her father asks him to keep her safe from a rival club with a score to settle, Oz knows it's his shot at his dream. What he doesn't count on is that Emily just might turn that dream upside down.
No one wants them to be together. But sometimes the right person is the one you least expect, and the road you fear the most is the one that leads you home.

Review
McGarry takes her signature brand of dramatic YA romances to the edgy world of motorcycle clubs...The core relationship sizzles and sparks with every glance and touch, and the underlying plot is solid.
-- "Publishers Weekly"Narrator Marguerite Gavin contrasts Emily's fearless exterior with her fear of the dark and frustration over family secrets. Narrator Sean Pratt's older voice seems an odd match for a teenager until we hear Oz's protective nature and old-soul maturity in action. Pratt's steady drawl lends credence to Oz's aspirations to join the biker gang and commit to Emily...Gavin's and Pratt's narrations illuminate Emily's and Oz's true natures just as the teens ferret out hidden truths in the twisty workings of biker culture.
-- "AudioFile"Emily starts to discover there may be more to life than her protected version. McGarry adeptly splits the narrative between the two protagonists and creates a story that readers will not want to put down...Verdict: This novel will be enjoyed by teens looking for a romantic and thrilling escape.
-- "School Library Journal"Tantalizing secrets and larger-than-life characters leap off the page in McGarry's new Thunder Road series. Set in a culture few get to experience and many misjudge, her latest takes you deep into the heart of a motorcycle club. With quirky secondary characters who will capture your heart and a remarkable twist, McGarry will leave you desperate for the next installment!

When I first heard that this book was coming, I wasn't sure about it. The Motorcycle Club setting didn't really appeal, but I'm happy to admit that I was wrong. Emily gives voice to the concerns many people would have about the Club's way of life - the sexism in particular - and Oz exposes the positives that we might not otherwise see - family, camaraderie, loyalty.
The hate to love trope has been well explored, but the quality of Katie McGarry's writing means that it doesn't feel stale. It's comfortably familiar - we know that Oz and Emily will fall for each other, but we're desperate to see how it will happen, and what Eli will do when he finds out about it!
There are, as with all of Katie's books, moments of laughter and moments that will bring you to tears. I finished this book with a contented, if wistful, sigh. I can't wait for more, and hope that a certain character from PTL will appear somewhere along the line.
I've been a big fan of Katie's since her first book and this , her latest , is no exception
Set in the world of motorcycle clubs with interesting characters ,it's the first in a new series
Family secrets and loyalties , conflict with rival groups and a way of life that seems quite alien to the mainstream
The only thing that jars a little is the authors pushing of the legit angle of the club - it's a bit overdone
Am looking forward to the next one, but it's scheduled for 2016 so I'll just have to be patient
Emily and Oz’s story was fantastic.
If you loved Katie’s other series you’ll definitely love this one.
I can’t wait for Razors book!!
Emily is a seventeen year old that will have her world turned upside down and all because her biological dad sent a message. Her top three awful moments of her life so far are:
1. Meeting her biological father at ten;
2. Breaking her arm in three places at nine; and
3. Falling into a hole and being trapped there overnight with a dead body at eight.
Emily believes her stepdad is superman, her own superhero and she thinks the world of him. Eli, her biological father, didn’t want anything to do with her or her mother when she became pregnant as a teenager. They fled Kentucky and haven’t been back, that is until the message from Eli. Now they are all torn.
Emily, Jeff and her mum are travelling to Kentucky and have to face Eli and his biker family. She is curious and has only seen him once a year for the past seven years. Does she have a whole other family there? What and/or how do they live? What do they do for a living?
OZ is seventeen and just graduated high school. He’s has dreamed his whole life of joining the family business since he could walk. Reign of Terror. This motorcycle club is a legit legal club that has a security business attached to it. It’s a dangerous lifestyle though and Oz is champing at the bit to get on the road and protect his dad.
Emily feels so out of place walking into the wake and looking for Eli. With bikers everywhere, her fear escalates and being in a funeral home to begin with has her anxiety at the max. Emily surprises Eli with her presence and then chaos ensues. The Reign of Terror princess has returned.
Emily’s now in danger. Oz is given the task of keeping Emily safe and their attraction is immediate. Even though they hate each other, the connection cannot be denied.
Who is after Emily and why? Why does everybody know the family secret except for Emily? Will Oz accept that Emily is part of the family? Why is her mother so against bikers?
Discover the secrets that surround Emily and if she will finally uncover the truth. Young love, intense loyalty and protective alpha males, strong female protagonists and action are all contained within. Nowhere But Here is absolutely a must read for all young adult readers. It was a lot of fun and the tension between Oz and Emily was amazing, the forbidden love component added to the intenseness and I am desperate to read more from this series. Who will be next?

"Lots of things seem innocent but in the end are deadly."
pg. 200
Emily has to travel with her parents for just a couple days to come to where her biological father is due to an accident within the family. This of course doesn't sit well with Emily who doesn't' care for him or his family one way or the other. But when she gets there, things are so much more than what Emily thought it would be. And then she meets Oz. Oz has wanted nothing but the motorcycle gang that Emily's biological dad is a part of since his birth. It's all he knows and he doesn't want to learn anything else. He sees they're a brother hood and he wants nothing more than to be a part of it and will not stand for anyone to get in his way. Until he meets Emily.
"Normal's overrated. You should try living on the wild side sometime."
pg. 205
BOOK. CRACK. That's exactly what this book was. I read it anywhere I could. At work, on the way to work, at the nail shop.... Anywhere I could open the book. And when I was reading it, I swear I could hear the motorcycle engines rumbling in the distance. That's just how invested I was in this book. Katie McGarry still has the writing that makes me want to LIVE in her books to experience the super real world that she's created. What I wouldn't give to go to one of those parties at the clubhouse (even though I know I wouldn't be invited...) or to be able to go be on the back of one of their bikes. My boyfriend owns a crotch rocket (Yes it's really called that...) But the people he hangs with just think his bike is cool. Nothing like the people described in this book. I'd love to see that in person one day. As you can see, this book stayed on my mind even when I wasn't reading it. I can't wait to continue on to Razor's story. (*SEMI-SPOILER*Speaking of which, McGarry, if you are planning to make Chevy and Violet be with others so help me.................. I can't handle Beth and Isaiah all over again!!!)
"Isn't it always the things you can't see that hurt you?"
pg. 293
The characters were another reason I loved this book so much. Although Emily got on my nerves with how naive she was, Oz more than made up for that. He was strong and brave, and was so loyal it hurt. Putting them together made for a really weird friendship, but it worked. I loved seeing what all they had to go through to make it work though. But even though she wasn't the main character, my favorite over everyone was Olivia. She was hilarious and she didn't take any s***. She really reminded me of my mom lol Well besides the clothes. But anyways, without Olivia, this story would not be the same.
"Some things are so inevitable that they don't need to be made formal."
pg. 369
As contemporary romance is my favorite genre, I went into this anticipating the romance. I appreciated it because it wasn't inta-lovey, but a really slow build and even then I hate to wait some more while they found their footing. I appreciated it, but I can admit I might've like it a little more if there was a little more. I hate that more than likely we'll see more of them in the next book than in their own. I admit, I'm being a little nit-pickey, but for the book to be 400+ pages, I just feel like they should've been given a little more than what they had.
"But sometimes what we need the most is what we fight the hardest: change."
pg. 462
Sitting back and thinking about this novel I could tell that it was more just a contemporary novel with some romance and that's ok. Katie McGarry still managed to get my attention and hold, making me think about her novel while I wasn't even near it. I'm excited to see what the next set of characters face in this next installment.

With her meticulous background research Katie McGarry brings to life a motorcycle club - "the Reign of Terror"- a brotherhood bound by trust, integrity and honesty who care for, defend and support each other and their families even after death. Lead by Eli and Cyrus McKinley, the men in this boys' club live a tough and dangerous lifestyle, working in a legitimate security business that protects trucking shipments across the State and afterwards expending some of their pent-up energy in wild partying. Into this setting the author casts Emily a sheltered teenager who's curious but resentful of her biological father and her McKinley relatives.
The plot heats up when unexpected events thrust a reluctant Emily into spending vacation time with Eli and the McKinleys, and she's forced to examine a truth about her past that has her life spiraling into confusion and heartbreak. In this story Emily is not only caught in a land mine of danger and emotional turmoil but eighteen year old Oz 's dream of joining the brotherhood may be the collateral damage. In a story that twists and turns and culminates in a surprising ending, Katie McGarry continually builds suspense and tension with every snapshot of the Riot's illegal activities that bring attacks, beatings, danger and the fear of a kidnapping to the Reign of Terror and especially to Emily.
The love story is heartwarming and moving when a clash of wills between Emily and Oz erupts in romantic fireworks that have both reeling from its surprising intensity. As in so many of her novels Katie McGarry cleverly weaves together the lives of two young people who struggle not only with the outcome of secrets, lies, bad choices and mistakes of well-meaning adults, but with feelings of being unloved and unwanted by their parents. In an atmosphere of sexual banter and innocent seduction Emily and Oz's attraction smolders until it bursts into flame as they find trust and solace in each other's arms.
Like the plot the characters are well-developed, realistic and complex especially Emily whose comfortable and simple bubble is shattered when she's forced to take risks and learn the truth about her past. Naive and innocent she's thrust into an environment that's rough and uncivilized like the bar in the barn with its wall of bras. Yet with the love of Olivia her outspoken and loving grandmother, her larger-than-life grandfather Cyrus and the devoted, persistence of her biological father Eli who'd willingly sacrifice his life for her, Emily finds her heart opening. Yet it's Oz's trustworthiness, generosity of spirit and intense love for his family, her dying grandmother and for handicapped children that Emily recognizes under his good-looks, cocky smugness and sarcastic humor. These traits not only draw the virginal Emily to this bad boy but make her more brave and bold in his company. Every character in this novel adds power, energy and excitement to an enthralling drama that you can't put down.
As a fan of Katie McGarry's contemporary teen romances I believe she continues to write with a flair that captivates her audience. I thoroughly enjoyed the plot and character development in "Nowhere But Here" and look forward to reading more in the Thunder Road series. Perhaps in further stories we'll even find out if Emily and Oz's romance survives the long distance between Florida and Kentucky.

Note finale : 5/5.

When I first began reading I was a bit concerned, the pacing seemed to be slow and I wasn’t sure if it was going to keep my attention, a major issue with reading is story pacing for me. It took so long to really delve into Emily and her life, and her actual personality, that I became concerned her lack of character was going to drive me away. She came across so timid to begin with, possibly even a bit of a wet blanket, that I was scared I might not even like the book with a protagonist who didn’t seem strong enough to keep my attention. Luckily for me, the action began not too far into the book, and that’s when the real story started for me. People came back from the dead, Oz blew onto the scene to rescue her from a rival gang and the story truly began, her venture into another world is when things got interesting. And even better, Emily’s personality was shown, her shyness and timidity to begin with was not her, as she became comfortable in foreign surroundings she relaxed and she became such a fun character to follow.
The story is all about Emily staying with her biological father for the summer and her journey to get to know the side of her family she has essentially ignored for the majority of her life. She meets family she did not even know about, all whilst there is a supposed threat from a rival MC that is hanging over everyone. As Emily began to grow comfortable in her situation and relax and act like a normal person I began to realise she was not the bag of fear and nerves we were first introduced to, instead she is stronger and way more badass than it first seemed.
I adored the whole family dynamic in the book because it was an unusual family. Emily had a father, but then Eli was biologically her father, and she was having a major issue with identifying family to try and avoid hurting people, it wasn’t helped with the mystery her mother shed on her life in Kentucky and with what happened when she got pregnant and ran away. I like families that aren’t the typical two parents and 2.5 kids because I’ve never experienced that family, so to read about confusing families is always interesting. Thankfully McGarry is good about writing complex relationships, because there are so many different things going on with this family you are at risk of being confused.
McGarry knows how to write a confusing story with mystery, a hella good romance, and some people you quickly grow attached to. And the fact I have a soft spot for boys on motorcycles definitely helps with this book. This is a story about family and all the different kinds of family that exist, both biological and those you choose to keep around you. It shows you a very different world where family means a different thing to the typical definition, and you know what, I wanted to be a part' of that family. There were some messed up things that happen why you did have to agree with Emily, they were messed up, but so are any other families. And the fact that these people were often choosing to view themselves as family made it all better. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series and to reread this book when it’s released. I recommend it to you all, it’s a fun contemporary read, but it isn’t overbearing in the romance department, something which continually ruins books for me.
It is a fantastic read I would recommend to all, you should check it out. Biker gangs, romance, and some epic family drama are to be experienced. One of my favourite contemporary reads of this year so far.
