Lift It Higher: The Saturdays Discography Rate

Both songs are relentless and unforgiving with how hard they go and the utter euphoria they create. Whereas All Fired Up is consistently hammering away, I think Not Giving Up edges on being better just because of the way the song manages to escalate as it progresses, each section seeming more frantic and amazing than the latter.

@Call My Name I fucking love you for probably preventing "All Fired Up" from winning with that 0.5 of yours! HELL YEAH! Dream come true, probably my #3 Saturdays song winning over my #40.

Good points.

To me "All Fired Up" is just a wall of constant sound...which can be fun every so often...

"Not Giving Up" is more teasing, with more progression and anticipating build up...which makes the experience more orgasmic in the end.

I AM FLOORED.

For the longest time All Fired Up was my 11, then it was Not Giving Up before settling on the perfection of Gentleman (read me queens!) but I am over the moon that Not Giving Up reigns supreme. SLÉ A BIT

Lowest Score: 0 x 1 (Call My Name)

Here we are then. In a way, I feel kind of glad that this beat what many would call the obvious favourite to win. What I love is that it expertly marries the boisterous dance-pop style they became known for with their joyous pure pop core to create this perfect little atomic bomb of a track. In that way, it really encapsulates everything there is to love about The Saturdays, which I think makes it a worthy winner!

Call My Name continues to rain on our finale parade so I’ll just get this bollocks out of the way first: “Cheap production, awful vocals and a shit video”. Seek help. While I’m at it, Deborux is also quite negative: “I expect to get flak for this score but I have never “got” this song. The verses and bridges are quite good but the chorus (from “hits me so hard” until the “not giving up” bit) ruins it for me – it just doesn’t work and sounds really awkward to me. Oh well. Could be any faceless dance track and would have fit better on On Your Radar”. Lord above. Let’s move swiftly on!

MrJames gets the positivity going brilliantly: “This delivered in just about every way possible. It's actually quite a simple, maybe even basic little song, but it is produced with such quality (and conviction from a girlband who know what they do best) that it ends up transcending it's structure to become something that sounds far bigger and far more epic. An almighty song”. DJHazey has it as a favourite: “You don't usually call this kind of fast-paced craziness a magnum opus, but for this group it kind of is. It's their "Something New" and nobody delivered it quite like they did at the time. Just a full on attack to every one your senses from first time "hit me so hard". I always see lyrics claiming it's "I don't know where" but I loving singing "out of nowhere" because it sounds better. Frankie coming in late to seal the deal, confirming that the song has put you on overload. The sign, seal, deliver moment for me is simply how quick the chorus is...one of most enjoyable songs to sing-a-long to I've ever come across in my life!” and Philllll also loves it: “The most played song in my iTunes. Probably the song of my life and definitely the epitome of their discography. It is simply perfect. Every girl gets a shining moment, the chorus is INSANELY addictive and the song can play effortlessly for hours,” and runrocketboy stans: “This song deserves more than what I gave it. It is LEGENDARY and should've been a number 1 for months. It goes SO DAMN HARD with that chorus".

Jacket also thinks it should have hit it big: “So close to an 11. This would have been a worldwide smash for almost anyone else. Or anyone with suitable birth control implementation,” and yes, there is plenty of moaning about when it was or wasn’t released. Shockbox quite harshly says: “Should have been the second single and they wouldn't have been in this fucking mess,” but JamesJupiter is kinder: “Really should have been the follow up single after What About Us. Things might have turned out differently for Living For The Weekend. Oh well, this is still so amazing”. Jam gives it an 11, and agrees: “yes, my 11. This should have been the second single after What About Us. This is the Saturday’s track I put onto party playlists and search for on Spotify when it’s my turn to pick a song at a house party,” and GhettoPrincess says it "should've followed up What About Us instead of Gentleman. Mollie's solo part is heavenly”.

phily693 also thinks it should have been released after “What About Us”, and takes us back to when we were all slain by it soundtracking some surfing: “Easily the best song on the album, a true highlight of their discography. When the clip was played on their E! show you just knew they had a great song on their hands. However why it wasn’t the 2nd single is baffling, it’s probably the most Saturdays-sounding song of the whole album. Each girl really owns their solo and highlights why the 5 of them are actually a great fit. I hope this song sees Popjustice in this rate”. Well, didn’t it just! Guy also looks back: “I knew once I heard the clip from Chasing the Saturdays, this was going to be one hell of a song. As happy as I am that we were able to bully the girls and their team into releasing this as a single, I'm so disappointed in its floppage. I'm having serious trouble putting into words how much I adore this song. So, to put it bluntly, it deserved my 11 because...TWO choruses, Mollie's ANGELIC voice, FRANKIE'S MIDDLE 8 (her whiney vocals work SO well here, somehow!),” and Blob was also hooked by the clip: “Another that should be an 11 but had to make way. Mollie's air light vocals, Vanessa's return to form and the others all around amazingness. The snippet had me perched from day 1 and the full version did not disappoint at all”.

Pim-Em-Elle wasn’t pulled in very much by the preview, but was swept away by the full version: “okay, I admit when I first heard this song (Chasing the Saturdays) it was kind of alright for me. And I didn't understand the hype. But when I heard it in full, it hit me so hard out of no where (pun intended). And Mollie's verses are lush and sweet that I would love to hear it on repeat and safe to say it's my favourite part of the song. I love the extra heart beat background during Vanessa's part. Frankie's middle eight is brilliant as well, I was like 'Whoo! Frankie!’”. Don’t think I haven’t noticed all this praise of Mollie’s verse! It truly is her finest moment, even just the clip of her recording it had me spellbound, I was totally enamoured with how delicate and smooth her voice sounded, and the way it floats gracefully on top of that pounding beat is just absolute heaven. imaduck says: “Mollie giving me that falsetto goddess realness, everything about this song is amazing,” and Mr. Humes addresses a certain war between two factions, and chooses the correct side: “Another brilliant Mollie moment. I really get the love towards Frankie's middle eight, but how can you beat Mollie Elizabeth's perfect verse? Definitely her best vocal moment”.

Lost In Japan. seems to support the opposition, and that’s not the only thing they’re wrong about: “Frankie's bit is obviously incredible but it doesn't really distract from the fact that this is a pretty generic dance song. They've done much better”. Go and sit with Call My Name and Deborux in the naughty corner, and actually, take Jersey with you too: “Sounds a bit cheap but still a jam”. Saying it’s a jam is not good enough to excuse calling it cheap! And what the hell, Midnight can probably join the lot of you as well: “It's all about that synth. There are moments when I'm liking the track a lot. Still, it's good for a few listens only, because the mind becomes quickly bored. The only moment the vocals seem right on this track is the chorus. The album mix makes for a more easy, more comfortable listening. In my eyes, the song lost much of its spark when it was given a single status. Still, one of the better tracks its parent album has to offer”. Some of you are totally mad.

My dear Vixen of course points out the second verse as the best bit: “Not God-ollie descending on Earth again to sing the second verse and take us to church again to repent our sins. Yes. Just, yes. Probably her best vocal ever and definitely the ultimate highlight of the song, even more so than Frankie’s amazing middle-8. The song in itself is outstanding and I definitely picture it as the pop-ier and more accessible version of ‘All Fired Up’. It truly feels like a Saturdays number again. Shame about its flop”. Entropy has some similar points about the song, and is another to give Frankie’s part a shoutout: “A powerhouse of a song. It’s like the less moody cousin of All Fired Up. Frankie’s middle 8 is just pure perfection and Mollie’s part in the second verse. WHAT A BANGER. The chorus smacks me in the face over and over every time I listen to it. BANGER,” and Mikey1701 also likens it to the song it has just beaten: “All Fired Up Part II and all the richer for it. It's one of their biggest tunes in terms of listening impact. It's on a par with the aforementioned anthem and it's one of their songs I find revisiting most often. Like Work, it deserved to be more than Single No. 5 on an album that the masses largely turned their back on. #JusticeForNotGivingUp”.

munro also thinks the song deserved justice: “Another absolute smash that should've been, everything about this screams The Saturdays at their best,” and CasuallyCrazed calls it “one of their crowning moments as a girlband”. 2014 thinks it would have made a great closing chapter: “Amazing is all I can say, would have been a fitting last single, as it’s quite celebratory,” and finally, WhenTheSunGoesDown speaks the truth, that “Not Giving Up” is irresistible: “Hit me so hard! Out of nowhere! I tried not to join in with all the hype surrounding this song pre-release, because I was afraid to be disappointed. How wrong I was, Not Giving Up couldn't disappoint if it wanted to. It's perfect from start to finish”.

Surely those are troll scores.

I wish All Fired Up had won, but this is a deserved winner as well. Not Giving Up is like All Fired Up's older, more sensitive sister.
