Raised on the Isle of Wight, Grylls, 42, has hosted more extreme-adventure TV shows on more networks than anyone else in the world. He is a former SAS soldier and the youngest chief scout in history. He lives on St Tudwal’s, his island on the Llyn Peninsula, off north Wales, and a houseboat on the Thames with his wife, Shara, and their three sons: Huckleberry, 7, Marmaduke, 10, and Jesse, 13.

I’m up at 7, and it sounds silly, but then, wherever I am in the world, I kneel by my bed and pray. There’s a humility about it. It also makes me calm. I say sorry for things I’ve done, pray for my family and our safety and the day ahead.
