Hanging Hand Carved Quilt Pattern carved from butternut and stained. The piece measures 14" diameter. I got tired of square quilts, so I tried something with different angles. I tried stars with 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 points. This is the 8-point star.
Evangelist measures 8"x 6 3/4". It is carved from basswood with a dark stain and gold and silver leaf.
Evangelist 2 measures 7-1/2" x 9-1/2". It is carved from basswood with a light stain and gold leaf.
Koi Fish measures 8-1/2" x 12". It is carved from basswood, and includes some wood burning. The piece was finished with acrylic paint.
After retiring, I wanted to explore using stylized animals as backdrops for chip carving. This piece started as a 2-1/2" x 6" x 7" piece of basswood, that I carved into a sea turtle. Then, I painted the shell, and drew the pattern, inspired by quilting patterns, on the paint with a stylus (to prevent pencil marks on the paint). I carved through the paint on the top. I also painted the under shell a lighter color and carve a mariner's compass on the bottom
