Diamondbacks Sign a Pair of Independent League Pitchers

In an attempt to unearth quality pitching in different places and to provide organizational depth, the Arizona Diamondbacks have reached out to the Independent Can-Am League. Right-hander Joey Donino of the league champion Rockland Boulders and fellow righty Danny Moskovits of the Quebec Capitales are the newest players in the D’back organization, signed earlier this week .

Donino was instrumental in leading the Boulders to their first-ever league title. He pitched six shutout innings on August 31st, to vault his team into a first place tie. Rockland won the regular season crown the following day. In Game 4 of the league championship series, he did not get a decision while hurling 6 2/3 innings, giving up five runs (0 earned) on three hits and five walks, a game his team won by a score of 8-7. Donino, who will turn 23 on October 26, pitched for Columbia University before signing with the Boulders upon graduation this Spring. In his first pro season, he went 5-4 with a 4.31 ERA in ten starts. He pitched a total of 56 1/3 innings walking 25 and striking out 53.

Moskovits played his college ball at Harvard, and like Donino, 2014 just finished his first season in pro ball. He appeared in eight games, five of them as a starter totaling 29 2/3 innings. Moskovits went 2-2 with a 3.03 ERA with 12 walks and 24 strikeouts. Also 23, he had his best performance on August 8th when he threw seven innings of shutout ball, walking only one and striking out eight.

The D’backs also signed two other players earlier this year from the Can-Am League. Another pitcher, Nick Sarianides age 25, was signed from the Trois-Rivieres Angels and played with the South Bend Silver Hawks. In 20 games, he went 1-1 with a 2.33 ERA in 27 innings pitched. The righty allowed 22 hits and nine walks while striking out 31. Infielder Steve Nyisztor, age 23, was signed from Rockland and ended up with the Hillsboro Hops. He received 178 at-bats and hit .309 with a .369 on-base percentage, three home runs and 23 RBI’s. He also stole 10 bases in 13 tries.
